Computer keeps shutting down

My computer keeps shutting down. Also, the hard drive keeps running as long as the computer is on. These events never happened until just recently. I was wondering if this could be virus. In any event, how do I correct this problem. Running xp on a HP 7000 Pavilion. thanks for any help

What do you mean by "shutting down"? Does it show a blue screen right before it shuts down?
