Okay everything is looking very good.

Just need to run those two anti-malware scans again to ensure we have got everything and then in the next post, all going well, clean away the tools we have been using.

Now

You have used Malwarebytes before. If you still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you no-longer have Malwarebytes please download from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

When you return please post
  • MBAM report
  • Kaspersky scan results

Hello mraskin,

Your machine looks clean to me. :)

The only ones there relate to quarantined items from your anti-virus program and from the tools we used. You can delete the ones in your anti-virus program yourself. Follow these instructions:

How to delete a quarantined file if it is not needed:
  • Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program and click Norton AntiVirus.
  • In the left pane, click Reports.
  • Click View Norton Quarantined and Restore.
  • In the left pane, select the type of risk that you want to remove.
  • In the right pane, select the files that you want to remove.
  • Click Delete Item.
  • When you see the message "Warning! Are you sure that you want to remove this item from Quarantine," click Yes.
  • Close the Quarantine window, and then exit Norton AntiVirus.
The ones in OTMoveIt quarantine will be removed by following the next instructions.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set. :)

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit3.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep

Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (Note: this as an added benefit!) that I have seen. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Startuplite is a tool to help you stop some programs not needed when you start your computer from loading. They will begin automatically only when needed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

  • SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users to detect and remove spyware.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If your Microsoft Update is not working automatically. Keep your operating system up to date by visiting

the computer rebooted and then when I wanted to remove the OTMoveIt3.exe it disapeared on it's own.
Strange it got removed by itself.

Yep.

Should have told you to turn back on all your anti-malware programs.

Took it for granted.

Not good.

Dear emeraldnzl :)
Thank you very much for all your help.
My laptop is flying now as it was when I just purchased it.
One more issue still need to be resolved, Norton 2005 does not get any more LiveUpdates for some reason... but I guess this is a separate topic ... :)

Cheers :)

I got the LiveUpdate popup message which says:
"LU1860: LiveUpdate has detected a potential security compromise on your computer: one or more entries for Symantec LiveUpdate servers exist in your Windows hosts files.

A malicious entry in your hosts files could prevent LiveUpdate from retrieving updates for your Symantec products, including anti-virus updates. Generally, Symantec LiveUpdate server entries should not appear in your Windows hosts files."

And it asks if I want to remove 2 entries in the Windows hosts files:
om.symantec.com
oms.symantec.com

what should I do?

Hi mraskin,

If your Symantec has gone out of time. By that I mean it needs a new subscription to renew it I would move on to something else.

While Norton/Symantec is a good package it has a reputation for being a resource hog.

I would uninstall and then run this tool:

Go here Norton Removal Tool to remove left over bits of the Norton AntiVirus Program. Choose the link for the version you had and then download and run the removal progam.

After that I would install another less resource hungry AV.

Here are two good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):
  • It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

Here are two good firewalls free for personal use:
  • Comodo
  • PC Tools Firewall Plus
After you have installed your new anti-virus,download all updates and then run a full scan of your computer. Save the results of the scan and then let the program fix all problems it finds. Post results of the scan back here.

Note: It is important to have only one real time anti-virus and firewall. If you have more than one you risk conflict resulting in problems running your computer and little or no protection.

I am having trouble to remove all the components on Symantec.
The Norton Removal Tool found Symantec WinFax and requested to remove it via Add/Remove.
I did go to Add/Remove, but was not able to remove the WinFax due to missing uninstall file .
So I did go to the Safe Mode and removed physicaly all the WinFax files and deleted it from the Recycle Bin as well.
But still Norton Removal Tool keep finding WinFax on my computer and asks to remove it via Add/Remove.
I did the Search for WinFax files but all seems to be clean.
What should I do now?

Also what about the Windows XP Firewall? Does it work good? Or should I switch it OFF?

I understanding of Windows XP Firewall is that it is better than nothing but not one I would rely on. Generally if you install another Firewall it will turn off Windows so you don't have to do it.

My advice would be to install another firewall. The ones I mentioned are good free for personal use firewalls. I use Comodo which works very well.

Haven't struck that problem with removal of Norton. In my case I uninstalled it using the uninstall utillity through Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and then ran the removal tool and it worked perfectly.

You could run RSIT again and post back here. I will have a look and see if I can remove any left over bits.

  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
