[JTD4T11]

Hi - I turned on my computer today (Windows XP) and got a screen on the desktop indicating I have a spyware infection, win32/adware.virtumonde and win32/privacy remover.M64 and the screen asks that I activate my antivirus. I ran Malwarebytes in safe mode and have a log posted below. I then went into normal mode and tried running RSIT but got stuck on the "performing registry dump" and the screen went blank saying a fatal exception occured (this has happend a few times), hit any key to continue. I did and got a pop-up saying "runtime error, prgram: C:\WINDOWS\system32\install.en.exe then the computer re-started itself. What should I do next?

Sorry for the delay



Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Step #1

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). DO NOT use it just yet.


Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.

• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
• Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Step #2

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.


After that, Reboot


Step #3

• Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
• Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
• Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
• Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

I tired running the SDfix but during the middle of the clean up the computer restarted for no reason. I went back into the SDfix folder and I have a lot more note pads now but none that say report.txt - Do I try running this again or will that cause more harm? This is not the first time the computer restarted on its own since I got the virus.

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

When I went to drag the Windows XP Recovery Icon over the Combofix Icon and hit run the process started to install but then I get an error saying Installation failed and then the blue box from Combofix appears saying its preparting to run. For some reason the XP recovery console will not install. Is this a big deal? Do I proceed with the Combofix anyway?

I ran combofix and it completed 48 stages then I got a blue fatal exceptions screen and the computer restarted. I checked the combofix folder for the log file and it was never created. Im not sure what else to do? Its like the virus is preventing any program from fully running.
