XP SP3 Toshiba Laptop

I have run most AV programs on this site, plus webroot, nortons and a few others with not malware results.

I do have a icon on the desk top named gop.exe but no I cannot delete as it says "used by other programs" this happens in regular, safe mode and if I go through the cmd prompt. My MS Dos icon has it's named changed to gop.exe also but I have the typical icon.

In regular operation, the problem I am having is that some programs like Nortons, MSOffice word will not open. Other word applications (excel, ppt, outlook) will operate normally.

I can send and receive emails through outlook but IE cannot find the internet nor can Nortons find it.

Everything works perfect if I run in safe mode. I am in safe mode now with no problems with IE and word and nortons works fine.

I am at a loss right now and I am not super experienced with computers but have some knowledge.

Thoughts?
