help with laptop network speed

I go to Duquesne university in Pittsburgh, and the internet speed is ridiculously slow on campus. Is there anyway i can increase the internet speed for my laptop?(acer aspire 6920) any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think the campus might have some proxy's / firewalls that are slowing it down. How 'slow' exactly is it? Have you tried going to the IT department on the campus?
