Edit 2: Uh, so you guys know, I'm in Safe Mode w/Networking at the moment, but when I try to restart my computer (both by itself, and pressing F8 and putting it to Boot Windows Normally) it goes past the black XP screen, but it doesn't go to my Login screen. It just sits there with my cursor in the middle, but movable. Did I really mess something up somewhere?

I fixed some things in HJT before I found this site based on this site:

http://hjt.networktechs.com/

and I have a feeling they weren't the best things to do. One of which was an svchost (said it was an imitation) and the other started with a B, I think. Those were the only 2.

Hi there,

can you try Last Known Good configuration and see if that works for you?
What two lines did you fix exactly?

Final question, do you remember where you got infected? Would you mind PMing me the link?

If possible I would like to run this in normal mode.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Hey there, thanks for your reply. I'm gonna answer your questions in order you gave 'em to me so I can avoid confusion because I'm terrible when it comes to this stuff.

1. can you try Last Known Good configuration and see if that works for you?

-I just tried it, and it gave me the same thing. It goes past the screen with XP booting up with the blue bar underneath, but after that it doesn't go to the Blue login screen, just a black screen with my cursor on it.

2. What two lines did you fix exactly?

-As I said, I don't remember which lines exactly, but I knew one was svchost.exe for sure. And I'm fairly sure the other was a B word. I feel really stupid now that I think about it. I was in Normal mode when I deleted those, I think.

3. Final question, do you remember where you got infected? Would you mind PMing me the link?

-Removed part about virus location.. Thanks for the info!

Sorry for a long post, but I have one more question. Should I try to do a System Restore to last night (which is the only point it gives), when I still had the virus, but could at least get into Normal Mode? You said you wanted to do this in normal mode, and I want to know if I should at least try to get in.

Thanks for the reply :)

Yes try a system restore, if it works run the tool in normal mode, otherwise run it in safemode for the time being.

Alright, I will do. I'm currently in the process of backing stuff up on my external HD in case anything goes wrong. I've had 2 HDs crash on me with this PC, one earlier this year, and one last year at the same time, so I don't want to take chances.

Perfect :)

ComboFix will give us some safety nets, but backing your important things up is always the best way to go.

I'll wait on the logs.

Awesome, ComboFix restarted my computer and I'm back in Normal mode now, with no virus apparent. Before I post my logs, I want to say that McAfee (which I think I'm gonna need a new AV program after this little encounter) has found a PUP concerning ComboFix. It says:

About this PUP
Name: RemAdm-ProcLaunch!171
Location: C:\ComboFix\psexec.cfexe

Is this something I can trust, or should I remove it? I'll leave it open until someone responds.

Anyway, here are my logs:

Hi there :)

PUP stands for Potentially Unwanted Program, it's a generic detection by McAfee.
ComboFix is a safe tool that is widely used on forums such as these (just look around :))

You have a new variant of a nasty rootkit that we need to get rid off.

Please go to add or remove programs and uninstall:
ViewPoint

Open Hijack This, do a scan only and put a check mark next to this line:

O15 - Trusted Zone: fe.trymedia.com

Press fix checked and exit the program.

Then,

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Antivirus-XP-2008-t212426.html
Collect::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSywwe.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSjcxe.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSjjsm.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSernw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSShpue.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TDSSevri.dll

ADS::
C:\WINDOWS\system32

Driver::

FireFox::
FireFox -: Profile - C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\8mmwn7is.default\
FF -: plugin - C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\npViewpoint.dll
FF -: plugin - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Media Player\npViewpoint.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
  • A browser will open.
  • Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

It finished, and gave me a log, but I didn't get a new window or message box that opened. But here's the log:

Hi there,

Can you look in the C:\Qoobox\Quarantine for a zipped file in the form [4]-Submit_Date_Time.zip where date and time are replaced by the actual data from the run.
Please upload that file here bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=4
Include the link to this thread, in the comments mention that I asked you to upload these files.

Log looks pretty good, delete this folder please:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

I do want to do a final online scan, the scan can take hours depending on the amount of data present on your harddrive so maybe run it while you sleep.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Post back with a new Hijack This log as well please :)

Looks good :)

The vol_toolbar refers to the Verizon Broadband Toolbar, it is not a virus - but considered adware.
If you want to remove it uninstall vol_toolbar and delete this folder C:\Program Files\vol_toolbar

You'll also need to fix these lines with Hijack This:

O2 - BHO: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-8CB0-AB60BB9AAE22} - C:\PROGRA~1\VOL_TO~1\VOL_TO~1.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-8CB0-AB60BB9AAE22} - C:\PROGRA~1\VOL_TO~1\VOL_TO~1.DLL

Delete this file as well for me:
C:\WINDOWS\BBSTORE\DSS\DSSAGENT.EXE

Your logs look good afterwards.

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
Posted Image
Notice the space between the x and / -- That needs to be there.

Now please download OTCleanIt.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double Click on OTCleanIt.exe, a window will appear.
  • Please press the CleanUp! Button.
This will remove the tools we used during the process of cleaning your computer.

MBAM needs to be uninstalled manually.

Now that you are clean, you'll want to stay that way.

Some important things that you should keep in mind in order to protect yourself:
  • Use common sense. This is the big one! Don't download programs from suspicious sites and be careful where you browse.
Things you can do to avoid downloading bad programs:
    • Google the program. Read reviews and opinions from other people on the internet, if you don't see any reports of foul play - then there more than likely is none.
    • Stay away from Cracks! However luring the thought of free software can be it's not worth the hassle and potential danger of getting infected.
    • Download the program directly from the website of the developer - then you can be certain you haven't downloaded a bogus copy.
    • Read the EULA (End User License Agreement) - Find out exactly what you are downloading. A good tool to aid you in this would be EULAyzer.
  • Keep your programs updated! Software developers update their programs to patch possible security risks. Do a scan once in a while for outdated programs using Secunia's Software Inspector.
  • Keep your protection programs up to date! No matter how good your Antivirus or Antispyware program is, without an updated set of definitions it will do you no good against the new infections. If you run a free program make sure to update them at least once a week.
  • Make sure that windows updates is enabled. Keeping your system up to date is a must - to turn on automatic updates take a look at this article by Microsoft.
I have listed two programs that boost your security while using no system resources
  • SpywareBlaster Take a look at the tutorial here.
  • ZonedOut Adds thousands of websites to your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Also consider using an alternative web browser. Two big named ones, both far superior to Internet Explorer in terms of security and performance, would be Firefox and Opera.

Make a habit of scanning your computer for viruses every week or so and backing up important files regularly.

Please also read Expert Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Please post back and tell me if everything is OK, so that I may mark this thread as Resolved.

One question, and then you can lock the thread.

Did you say I could delete these?

C:\QooBox\Quarantine\[4][email protected] Infected: Backdoor.Win32.UltimateDefender.gen 1
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\[4][email protected] Infected: Rootkit.Win32.Clbd.kf 1

Edit: And do I need to remove the tools I used, or can I keep them in case something goes wrong in the future?
