External Hard Drive Not acceessible.. HELP

System is xp
Issue is External hard drive
Western Digital 500 GB

My hard drive was working fine early today and then I tried to open it and it gave me this message.

j:\ is not accessible
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

My device manager reconizes it and says it is working properly and healthy. I was able to do a virus scan on it fine. I just cant open it. I need it fixed! I am photographer and store all my client pictures on it. Can this be fixed. I really need to retrieve all the images off of it. Please help!
