Adding a HDD without formatting?

I just did an upgrade on my motherboard, CPU, RAM, , etc. I installed Windows XP on my 250GB HDD. I also have a 400GB SATA HDD with all my data on it. When I hook it up, I can see it under Disk Management, but it's trying to force me to format it before I can access it. But, if I do that, I'll lose all my data. Is there some kind of work-around for this?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help out a frustrated wife who's upgrading the PC for her husband's birthday!

:)

Hi DivaRae,

Please try to keep it in one thread as this is the same type of problem you asked on your previous thread.
Now, I believe you mentioned that you bought the 400GB SATA HDD and its new. Do you have any files on it already? Usually, you're only forced to format if the hard drive has not been formatted to be used. If you are worried that it will format your 250GB then that's not the case, Disk Management cannot format the drive your current OS is installed on. So when it asks you to format, it would say there that its trying to format the 400GB and not the 250GB.

The only time you do not need to initially format a hard drive is if you bought it as external drive (I usually format all my drives first before using).

Hi Kamille,

Thanks again for coming to the rescue! As I mentioned, the 400 GB HDD has lots of files on it, because I followed your instructions from the previous thread, formatted it, and put all my data on it. Now, I've upgraded all the hardware, but I'm not able to access the drive.

What other components did you upgrade? Are you getting an error when you try to access it or just force you to reformat? Are you seeing the hard drive in My Computer?

First, I put the data from my old hard drive onto the new hard drive; I transfered the data from a 250 GB IDE drive to a new 400 GB SATA drive. In that process, I formatted the 400 GB drive.

I used a new motherboard, cpu and RAM.
Asus AM2+ M2N-MX Se Plus, AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ box (2x 3.1Ghz) 89W, and Aeneon 2GB DDR2 800 CI5 (PC2 6400). I also got a new LG lightscribe DVD burner.

In rebuilding, I used the above hardware, plus some of my old components: LG DVD burner, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS, Firewire PCI card.

I installed windows on the 250 GB HDD.

At first, I was having trouble getting BIOS to recognize both optical drives and both hard drives. It would either only see the IDE drives or only see the SATA drives. While it was only seeing the IDE drives, I went ahead and installed Windows. Then, I realized I hadn't run the drivers for the motherboard (duh). After that, I was able to see the 400 GB HDD in Disk Management, and I assigned it a drive letter, but it wants me to format it. I can also see it in My Computer, but if I click on it, it tells me that the drive isn't formatted and asks me if I want to format it. So, that's where I'm stuck.

Here is my DxDiag, if that helps:

Can you right click on the 400GB hard drive in My Computer, select Properties, check Free Space.
Check if the hard drive is either empty or have something on it and let me know.

Did you reinstall the OS while both hard drives are installed? Are you sure that when you reinstalled the OS that you didn't (by accident) remove/delete the partition on your 400GB (in this case there's only 1 partition).

I'm a little stumped here as it should automatically see your 400GB harddrive and not ask you to reformat because you already did that.
Did you make sure that when you copied your files to your 400GB that the files work?

It's properties say that it's 0 bytes.

I think you've got it... :) Now that you asked that, I was having problems installing Windows because of the partitions. It said it would need to write some files to the 400GB drive, but that I had to partition it. Oddly, it was showing up as being full, even though it's actually only about half full. I think at one point, in desperation, I deleted then recreated the partition. Finally, I disconnected the 400GB drive so that Windows could install without hanging up at that point. Then, after Windows installed, I reconnected it.

Yes.

It's properties say that it's 0 bytes.

Did you read my edit? Does the Used Space says 0 bytes? If that's the case then the drive is empty and there was something that deleted whatever is on that drive.

I think you've got it... blushing.gif Now that you asked that, I was having problems installing Windows because of the partitions.

So you're saying that you deleted the partition on the 400GB? When you do that, you just deleted whatever is on that drive. It is always better to have just one hard drive installed on your computer (or just disconnect the cable of those hard drives you don't need yet) when you install your OS because you might do something on other hard drives you're not suppose to.

So if this is the case, all your files on your 400GB are now gone. There are some programs you could use to retrieve your data (some kind of Data Recovery Software) but I am unsure which those are. Since you haven't done anything on the 400GB, the data are not overwritten and you should be able to recover it.

Hi DivaRae. I'm sorry to hear that you lost your data on the hard drive.

As kamille mentioned, there are programs that can (at least attempt) to recover lost data. You should in fact be lucky because the data wasn't overwritten by anything.
One of those programs is Recuva (pronounced "Recover"). This software is not a guarantee that you will be able to recover any lost data. Recuva is free software from the Piriform company, and may be downloaded by clicking on Recuva above.

Hopefully you will be able to recover something of that lost data.

Okay not to kill any good ideas and what not, But I had roughly the same problem as the OP, I found that with using a live Cd called Parted Magic works wonders.

A little background so you can see where I am coming from. First of all on Sat I shifted my HDD's over to a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ so I could play BIAHH as the motherboard / video card couldn't quite handle it. Well I installed XP on to my 80 Gig drive and the Installer saw that my 320 was unformatted at the time and Asked me if I wished to format. I said no, shutdown the system yanked it, and put the drive in to a friends computer. And his computer said the same thing in windows XP that it was unformatted and needed to be formatted for it to work right, Well I thought that is BS as the drive was just working. And I remembered that 2 weeks ago my friend needed to re size his HDD and we used the live cd called Parted Magic. Well I put the cd in booted in to Parted Magic with my 320 connected of course and it recognized my 320. Upon further investigation I found that my Partition Table on the 320 got out of whack and that all the data was still there. I repaired the partition table rebooted and my drive was back with all the data.

So I suggest using Parted Magic to see if it is still there and if the partition table is messed up or not.

Check out Parted Magic here -> http://downloads.partedmagic.com/ you will obviously want the top link / entry there download it, burn it, boot with it.

Now If you want I can write up a guide of what I did so you can recover your data / partition. As the interface with the program can be a bit clunky and hard to work with at times.
