I had been using Outlook Express for a few years and I seemed to like it very much for a variety of reasons. Just a couple of months ago, I changed my operating system on my laptop from English to Japanese. You see, it's a Japanese PC which originally came with a Japanese OS. I decided after purchasing it that I would install English Windows (XP) so that I could use it in my native English rather than Japanese. It worked very well for a year or more. Eventually, I had a few problems and needed to re-install Windows. I wanted to re-install the English version but kept having some difficulties so I decided to re-install the Japanese Windows that came with my PC.

As a result of the change, my Outlook Express was not able to properly import my addressbook. It scrambled it and made it impossible to use. I tried re-importing my addressbook over and over, only to be unsuccessful. Finally, I decided to ditch Outlook Express and instead try Microsoft Outlook. This client allowed me to import all of my addresses without any problems at all. However, I have been very disappointed in Microsoft Outlook. I find it very slow -- and it also seems to slow my PC down considerably. I find it unreliable and not user friendly. It has been very frustrating to say the least because I rely on my addressbook for a lot of daily use.

Does anyone have any recommendations for me? It looks like I will need to keep my Japanese OS to avoid other problems. I would prefer to use an e-mail client rather than not. My main e-mail accounts are Yahoo.com and Gmail.com. Thanks kindly!

Can't understand your criticisms of Outlook. It works flawlessly for me (Outlook 2000) on XP. Easy to understand and a lot easier to back up emails & contacts compared to the express version -- way easier - just export one file and you're done.

Only other email client I can suggest is the free Mozilla Thunderbird from the Firefox people:

Never used it myself, so just how easy it is to import your data from Outlook I cannot say.
