Microphone on Intel 945PSN board

I've recently built a new computer on an Intel 945PSN board I had sitting around for a while.

I can't seem to get the rear mic to work. The Intel support site isn't much help. I can get sound from the rear headphone jack, but not the rear mic. With one headset, I get nothing. With another, if I enable the mic, I get a loud, irritating noise.

Any suggestions? Will a USB headset/mic take care of my problems?
