Okay, I'm pretty much a n00b here, so if someone could please help me step by step, I'd be very, very grateful

Right now, all I am is desperate, since my comp went crazy...

I get these popups, ran multiple scans with Hitman Pro and almost start crying :tazz:
I found the popuper.exe file in my taskmanager, so that's how I got here.

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Don't run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key until menu shows up. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\WINXP\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINXP\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINXP\popuper.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Fix ALL the O18 entries here. Best way to do this is to hit the space bar and then the down arrow key. Do this repeatedly until all the O18 entries are checked.

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINXP\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINXP\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINXP\popuper.exe

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Thanx for the help! :tazz:

Here's the HijackThis logfile

I have one other question:
I understood that this popuper-thingy also infects Messenger.
Should I remove that somehow as well?

I can't verify (need to look into that) that this infection is aimed at messenger, so you may continue using it if you wish. Or if you want, use a program like Trillian. It's free also and has an all-in-one IM for AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and IRC.

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Well...

The popups are gone, that's great. :tazz:
But I can't change my background anymore (there's 2 options, screensaver and settings)

Plus the fact that I now have 2 messengers starting up at every reboot...
The 7.0 version and the 4.something version.
But that might just be due to the fact that this machine ran on win98 before...

Is one of those messengers for Windows and one for MSN? The Windows one came with Microsoft Windows.

For the wallpaper problem:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.

Any other problems now before I close this topic?

Yeah, one's from MSN, the other from Windows.
I only use the MSN one, the Windows one just started poping up after the popuper.exe thingy had been on.

I can't find the "web tab" when I click on the Customize desktop button though.
But I got ot change the background (and appear to have lost some of the pics to select from), so I haven't been able to do everything you suggested.

Apart from all this, I think this thread can be closed

Thank you very much for the help! :tazz:
