Connecting laptop to tv via vga

I have a Compaq Presario C700 laptop and a 32" AOC lcd tv. Both have vga inputs but when i hook up a vga cable between the two the tv just says no signal. Any ideas on why this would be?

Usually you have to hit a button combination to activate the vga port. On my toshiba it is function key + F5. Also, when you have the VGA plugged in you can right click on the desktop --> properties --> settings tab. There should be some options for outputting to a second monitor.
