Hello,

My problem started about 3 weeks ago when a web site I visited told me I had the Trojan/Rustok_N. I tried to remove the problem using Spybot Search & Destroy and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Free. I thought I got rid of it then I got Zlob.DNSchanger.

Every time I do a scan using Spybot S&D it finds Zlob.DNSchanger. I remove it and it comes back. MBAM finds several things (6) also and when I try to remove the selected items, it requires a reboot for the removal to finish. Upon removal, Zlob comes back. This thing is preventing my Mcafee from updating. It prevents windows from updating and it makes browsing very difficult. (due to re-directing) I'm sure it is making my personal information volnerable.

I have followed the instructions you have provided. You'll notice I have tried a few other things as well....like Smitfraudfix and UnHackMe among others. I hope I haven't complicated the issue too much. But, at this point I really believe I need the help of an expert to rid me of this problem. I would really appreciate some help with this. Thanks in advance!
I will post my logs here:

Hi, kbarnett :)

Welcome.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Install the Recovery Console upon request.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hello JSntgRvr,
Thanks very much for your reply. I am attempting to temporarily disable McAfee.....I read the info on how to do it but I don't get a choice for "exit" when I right click on the icon in the System Tray. Should I close the process from the task manager or is there is another way?

Hi, kbarnett :)

I see no problems left there. Lets check for remnants.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Kaspersky online scanner uses JAVA tecnology to perform the scan. If you do not have the latest JAVA version, follow the instrutions below under Upgrading Java, to download and install the latest vesion.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe) and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Hi JSntgRvr,

I'm not so sure We got it all yet. I tried to do the Kaspersky Online Scan but I got the following error:

____________________________
"Update has failed. Program has failed to start. Close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 and open it again to install the program.
You must be online to update the database...................failed to connect to the update source."
____________________________

I am connected and I have disabled all virus software including the McAfee.

What am I doing wrong?

Lets try another option:

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan!
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Hello JSntgRvr,

Well...... I removed C:\APPLICATIONS\BULK RENAME 2.7.0.4.EXE as you instructed. I rebooted and updated Spybot S&D. I did a scan and it found Zlob.DNSchanger. I removed it. I updated MBAM and did a full system scan....it found 6 things just like before. I removed them then it robooted. I then ran Spybot S&D.....it found nothing this time.

However, I still connot update my McAfee. SuperAntiSpyware will not update and I noticed I still have a program entry in my "add or remove programs" area called Spyware Remover. But, it doesn't give me the option to be able to remove it. Also. when I try to go to the windows updater site from within the windows security center it redirects me to www.msn.com. So, windows will not update. The Spyware Remover thing also appears in the windows security center as an additional choice for something I can "manage security settings for:" I did update to the latest version of Java and last night I couldn't log on to my internet banking site. It gave me a script error. I tried it from another computer and it worked just fine. I am not sure what is going on.

I am posting my latest HiJackThis log below. I thought we were getting close......but now I'm not so sure.

Whenever you experience these findings, you must provide me with the reports. I can't with what we are dealing with unless you do so.

Download OTScanit2.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanit2 on your desktop. OTScanit2 can be detected as malware by your firewall and Ativirus. Chose Ignore on any warning alert.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Open the OTScanit2 folder and double-click on OTScanit2.exe to start the program.
  • Leave all settings as they appear as default, except for the following:
  • Under Drivers, select "All".
  • Under Rootkit Search, select Yes
  • Under additional Scan select the following:
    • Reg - ControlSets
    • Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
    • Reg - File Associations
    • Reg - Security Center Settings
    • Reg - Tcpip Persistent Routes
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here (Do not copy and paste in a reply, rather attach it to it).

Hi, kbarnett. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Remove the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.

    Posted Image
Create a Restore point (If the above process fails to do so):
  • Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  • In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

Re-Scan and let me know if the trojan is still been detected. If it does, post the name of the file and its location.

Okay,
interesting results,

I followed your instructions on clearing system restore, enabling system restore and setting a system restore point. I then followed the instructions for removing OTScanit and Combofix. I then rebooted.

This computer is a Dell notebook. I did all the above while I was not on a internet connection. (I took it to work with me and I don't have a internet connection I can use there.)

After I rebooted without a internet connection, I then ran a scan using Spybot S&D and found no problems. Then I ran a MBAM full scan and found no problems. All seems well.

I brought the computer home and it connected to the home wireless network like usual. I ran a Scan using Spybot S&D and it found the Zlob.DNSchanger. I printed the info and I will show it below for you to review:

Spybot S&D says the following about the findings:
Company:
Product: Zlob.DNSChanger
Threat: Trojan

Functionality
Supposed to be a software to enable access to pornographical videos.

Description
This trojan horse changes the DNS settings, installs and runs a hidden exe file which is added to winlogon .

Hi, kbarnett :)

It sounds like problem is in the the router's DNS settings.

Unless you have not removed malwarebyites, please download the latest from Here or Here

Next disconnect your system from the internet, and your router, then…

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
===============================================

Next you must reset the router to its default configuration. This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router. Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds). If you don’t know the router's default password, you can look it up HERE

However, if there are other Zlob-infected machines using the same router, they will need to be cleared with the above steps before resetting the router. Otherwise, the malware will simply go back and change the router's DNS settings. You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset. Check out this site here for video tutorials on how to properly configure your router's encryption and security settings. You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using.

Once you have ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on the infected system, and reset the router to its default configuration you can reconnect to the internet, and router. Then return to this site to post your logs.

===============================================

Please post the Malwarebytes log and let me know how things are running now :)
