I've found some threads on this forum solving a similar problem for other people but with warnings that the solutions are tailored to the individual. I'll be grateful for any help you all can offer (:

Origin: I was stupid - downloaded and installed sketchy software -_-! I was trying to get a driver and I KNEW better than this.

Problem: When I open Firefox and do a search, I get a list of correct search results but when I click on the results I get taken to ad pages instead of the actual results.

Solution attempts: I tried to install Malwarebytes' Malware removal but when I double-click to install it, nothing happens. I have no problem installing and running it on my clean computer.

AVG freezes and Spybot only runs in the background, I can't get it to open so I can immunize. I also can't update any of my software (assuming the attempted connections are also being redirected). I'm not sure if these problems are related or pre-existing because I only just dug this PC out--my boyfriend hasn't used it since he got a laptop a few years ago.

I ran Hijack this and got a log but when I tried to post it here I got a message saying that my version of Hijack This is outdated. I downloaded the new version but when I double-click to run it, nothing happens. So my log is from the older version, hopefully it's enough to help.

I'm not having problems anymore so I THINK the PC is fixed, but I would appreciate confirmation of this.

Changing Malware Bytes and HTJ's .exe files to a number.exe (1.exe, 3.exe) allowed them to run.

Malware Bytes seems to have removed the redirect virus (thus allowing me to update all my protection and fix even more problems :) ) and whatever was preventing spybot and avg from opening.

It caught 20 objects, including one 'resycled boot.com.' I quarenteed everything but when I went to open the C drive, I got a message that it couldn't open because of rescycled/boot.com ... even though MB told me it removed it! I also had a flash drive connected and it gave the same message.

I found Flash_Disinfector, ran it, and now I can open C without a problem.

Given how it jumped from C to the flash, I'm afraid of using the flash on my clean computer lest this thing (or something worse) jump over.

I would appreciate it if someone could check over my logs and confirm whether it looks clean to you.
