Search Miracle + Elite Toolbar [likely more]

I've reached the end of my ropes... I've followed logs by other people on how to remove both of these nuisances, but to no avail. I believe I'll need special attention on this.

I'm somewhat desperate: I need my computer back, and this is just getting way out of hand.

In any case, here's my Hijackthis log. I already have Adaware and Spyhunter, but they haven't fixed the problems. I run Norton's Internet Security and Antivirus, but am still plagued. I recently downloaded RegScrub to help, but am still afflicted.

Hi LanderZ and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Now we go after the "Elite Toolbar" bad boy.

A. Download the "Elite Toolbar" removal tool from HERE

Please note that this tool must be run in SAFE MODE

B. How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

C. Unzip LQFix and run LQFix.bat

D. After the program has completed its work, REBOOT your system if it doesn't ask you to.

E Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed excepr for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Hi LanderZ,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

FILES

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\rrup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\canada.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zrsqmjqd5.exe

FOLDERS (with all their content)

C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar
C:\WINDOWS\EliteSideBar

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Many thanks, again.

I did as you explained... I had deleted the Elite tool and Elite Side Bar folders, previously, following another person's help, so they were still gone. I also double-checked, and ticked everything you told me to, though a few remained [you'll see them on the log].

I did get the rrup/canada.exe files, though. I couldn't find the zrs one to delete.

Not trying to bump, just informing that I'll check back in the morning ^.^

You've been so incredibly helpful: The popups are gone, as is the bar. I still can see Elite Sidebar in the View->Explorer Bar option, as well as Elite Bar when I right click the top links-bar, but I tried clicking it and got nothing.

One other thing to note: Before this happened, I used to see Norton's IS and AV in that top listing [where the Address bar and all that is], but it's gone, now, and not in the options to put back up on Rightclick.... Should I re-install?

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folder, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar<<<Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zrsqmjqd5.exe <<<File

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Ah, any chance you'd know how to get the context menu thingee back up and running? I'm clueless.

The right-click Elite bar is gone, but Sidebar is still under View... Oh well.

Neither of the files were there [again] in my search of Safemode. I tried fixing O2 a half dozen times.... it appears to be stuck :-/

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

This should be done in Safe Mode:

1. How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.

2. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service.

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

3. Go to start > run and type: sc delete pcvabwtc5

4. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, and place a checkmark beside the following entry:

O23 - Service: oeojhudorrgu (pcvabwtc5) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\zrsqmjqd5.exe (file missing)

5. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file, if present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\zrsqmjqd5.exe

6. Reboot the machine into Normal Mode

7. * Download a free copy of Registrar Lite from HERE and install the program.

* Open Registrar Lite and copy and paste the following text into the Address Bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

* Click on the green GO button to the right of the Bar.

* Scroll down the list of available CLSIDs in the right hand pane until you find the one you are looking for. Left click on it to highlight it

* From the top toolbar, choose Security Tab<<Edit<<Permission<<highlight Administrator and click on the ADVANCED button.

* Make sure there is a check mark placed next to :"Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to the child objects...." Click OK.

* Now click on the RED X on the taskbar to Delete the key.

* Exit the program

8, Open HJT,Scan and place a checkmark against the following entry:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {34DB3CBE-0464-2D63-E80B-45CF74B34AA4} - (no file)

As soon as the item is checked, I would like you to click Fixed Checked and exit the program.

9. Reboot your system.

10.
Please download Winhelp2002's Deldomains.inf to your desktop.

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select Install

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

11. REBOOT your computer

12. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Let's see. I did all that, though the oej[etc] was already on Stop, but I still was able to Disable it. I deleted the pcv thing, but the syst32/zrs... etc thing was still not present.

I did notice that there was a canada.exe file in my Windows file, though, in Safe mode... I deleted it out of fear.

In any case, everything else went smoothly.

Hi LanderZ,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Download the following program HOSTER.

2. Unzip and run the program.

3. You will be presented with a screen where you will find the following option:Restore Microsoft Original Hosts. Press it and Close the program.

4. Reboot your system.

5. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Hi LanderZ,

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
