i'm trying to find out the dimensions for a LGA775 socket. from leg to leg or diagonal in cm or inches where the heatsinks fits into the motherboard

According to this Intel document (page 102) the length from leg to leg is 72.00mm (it is a square so if you need the diagonal you can easily calculate it). What is nice is that document also gives the maximum component heights around the socket if you go through the next couple of pages. It isn't the easiest thing to follow but ANY and ALL data you could ever want on LGA775 is there (including both ATX and BTX form factors).
