Hello all, here's the dilemma,

I built a new computer for my dad for Christmas. All brand new, up to date stuff. Everything sata, etc...

First problem was when I was installing the OS(XP Pro), it only would go to 87% and then hang. Tried it again, same thing, it hangs at 87%, and yes I gave it a while to see if it would move. It didn't.

So I tried again and this time I did the express(or quick) install, and it went fine.

Once I had it up and the firewall on, I went to windows update and got sp2 and everything else it gave me. But, when I gave it to my dad yesterday and he started messing with it, its only recognizing 137GB of the 500GB Sata hard drive.

Now I know that just XP has this barrier, but like I said, it has sp2 and everything is brand new, mobo, dvd drive(sata), etc... I can't see this being a problem with a mobo that has hdmi, 4 sata ports, thats brand new, Vista ready(although it has XP sp2), etc... This is up to date stuff.

So whats the prbolem here? Do I have to go into bios and change something? Do you think that it hanging in the install at 87% has something to do with it? Should I reinstall the OS? I need help!!!!

PLEASE HELP GUYS!!!!!!

Thank you

Since all your components are the latest and greatest, I suspect that the XP cd version you used did not have SP 1 on it.
If you look in bios, it should show it as a 500gb drive.
If you go to windows disk management, you should see the rest as unallocated and you can format from there.
If you want to repartition to another size, then you need to use partitioning software.

Here is some reading.

I thank you very much for the reply. I will look into that as soon as I get home from work.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the XP Pro I installed didn't have sp1 on it so I went to windows update to retrieve that as well as everything else. Maybe thats where I went wrong. I do have a new copy of XP Pro with sp1 on it. I guess if I have to I will just reinstall the OS with that. Or use the disc and slipstream sp3 along with it.

Does anyone have an idea as to why when I was installing the OS, it kept hanging at 87% ? It was weird, no matter what I did, when it got to 87% it just stood there and I had to perform a quick install to get it to work. By doing the quick install, do you think that has any adverse effects as well?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is a very knowledgeable place that has been of great value to me. Is there a way I could make a donation?

Thanks everyone!
