Vista update taking forever

My DD is running a Toshiba laptop satellite with vista 32 on it that was given to her ..however when I try and do a update the system appears to connect, it showed at one time that there was almost 9 Meg's of updates but it is taking forever to install and I'm not even sure it's installing I mean it's been running now for over an hour.

Any clue, not a computer type person but will take any help I can get...thanks

OK Guys call off the dogs I fixed it...Yep I did. I found that I was running two firewalls and one was a Norton 360 I downloaded the Norton tool ( Didn't want it any way ) after I dumped that bloat ware as you guys call it the updates began pouring in.

So that to anyone who would have replied..but I am all set
