usb ports not working

a few months ago i disconnected a device without properly disconnecting it first. i just pulled the plug without safely disconnecting it. and now only 2 of 4 usb ports work, and they will not recognize my flash drives or digital video camera or external hardrive anymore. in fact, if i plug any of these devices in my computer freezes and i have to manually shut it down. any solutions anyone?
