Did you already try this:
http://support.micro...kb;en-us;290301

You can use it to clean out any incomplete install from the log and that error shouldn't come back.

I hadn't until you posted about it. I downloaded it. I ran it. And I noticed that Internet Explorer doesn't show up in the list of applications that were installed with Windows Installer. Which means I can't repair it that way. Now, whether Microsoft chose to use their own installation software for installing Internet Explorer or not isn't my business. But if they do use it, then the Install Cleanup Utility doesn't recoginize that I have it, or that it's still in the middle of installing.

Also, I tried installing IE6 a couple more times today just to make sure it still doesn't work after everything we've done lately. And whenever I run it, it tells me that I have all of the components and it suggests that I not install them again. To that I tell it to re-install them anyway.

And it still doesn't work, dangit.

Try this please.

Click Start > Run > copy&paste rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt" > OK

That should start the Internet Explorer Repair tool.

Ok, I ran the repair tool. I clicked on the radio button 'Repair' (though it was the only one of the 3 that I could click on). It then told me that it needed to reboot, which I allowed it to do.

Now what should I do? I don't want to mess this up.

Open IE and under Help > About check the version number.
Let me know what it says now.

If it is 5 you should now be able to install IE 6

Well, that sounded promising. But I still can't open IE, not even to check the version number.

Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!
Reboot into Safe Mode

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
Reboot back to Normal Mode!

You didn't drive me crazy, but I sure wish I knew what was wrong. ;)

One thing that puzzles me in the WinPFind log is the file creation date: 5/1/2040

Can you check your system clock and see if it is in the same computer-age as we are. :tazz:

5/1/2040 was the date that was set when Windows 2000 was installed. So any files with that date listed as creation date should be the original files from install-time.

I should have told you my computer is a time machine. :tazz: Now where did I leave that chrome-plated flux capacitor again?

Hmm. I wonder what the consequences could be.

Can you read here:
http://support.micro...om/?kbid=318378

Especially have my eye on this part:
1. While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
4. Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
5. Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6.

The key in the registry is the same in Windows 2000.
Can you try it and let me know?

I set the value of IsInstalled to 0 for IE in the registry as suggested. Then I reinstalled ie6. No luck.

This is a long shot, but I don't want to find out after another 50 posts that it would have worked. :tazz:

Please download smitRem.zip and save it to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to its own folder on the desktop.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Well, it was worth a shot. But that was about it. I did as you described and I have no change in my IE status. My icon labels are blue, though. :tazz:
