The faulty machine is a Compaq Presario X1000 laptop loaded with Windows XP Home Edition.

I was browsing the HP website today when my screen went black. I restarted my computer...

The Compaq logo shows...

Then it said

"Invalid boot.ini
Loading from C:\Windows"

It then sends me to the menu where I can choose which safe mode to boot into, last known config, or boot normally...

Then the process repeats itself.

My buddy Jason came over and we were able to get to the recovery console using a Windows disk.

I had gone online and found a method to try and resolve the issue.

I typed in bootcfg /list but that didn't work (it couldn't find boot entries) and I tried bootcfg /rebuild which didn't work either.

The system then prompted me to run chkdsk. I did so and it stated that one or more errors were found on the disk.

At this point, my laptop is on the kitchen table with a blinking cursor waiting for me to make the next move.

Any ideas?

Jacob
