I know I'm new here, but this is driving me INSANE

I keep getting errors within winrar that say all the packed files are corrupt, I also keep getting crashes from firefox and other programs. First I figured it was a virus, so I installed kaspersky and it found nothing. After that I tried to reboot xp, but it still does the same thing! I thought maybe it was my ram or harddrive, so I switched those out and rebooted the os again, still nothing! This sucks because a lot of my files are archived via winrar, rendering them useless until I figure this out....anyone have any clue?? It even happened when I tried to download avg's free software and it had to extract compressed files....Is it my inability to unrar, or maybe my nic is going out and corrupting downloads somehow? This is driving me insane. Any help WILL be appreciated.
