Hi -

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I'm currently having an issue that I can't figure out.
Below I will include a most recent DxDiag which includes all of my specs:

Here's what's happening........
After a bit of time after a restart my computer appears fine.
Then after a bit of time I will get a screen flicker or two, ultimately resulting in a complete crash. The pixels all get cut up across the screen so there are crazy lines, until I can't even make anything out.

My mouse remains active, and if I'm patient I can make little bits of information out and even navigate around the computer. Safe mode works perfectly.

My first move was to change video drivers obviously. I have done that to no avail. My video driver of choice had been an older one and this problem did not begin after any changes I had made. After trying 3 other video cards with no change whatsoever in the amount of time this crash happens, I have decided that isn't the problem.

I have deactivated my sound to see if that was the issue, and it is not.

My bios are up to date.

I then attempted a system restore to a week ago, as this problem was not apparent until 2 days ago. Strangely enough, the system restore did not fix the problem either.

I have a hardware firewall, software firewall, anti-virus, hijack this -- and have done many sweeps which have made me conclude that I don't have any type of monkey business going on.

I have opened my case and cleaned out all dust, and made sure all fans were operating correctly. They are.

My last attempt last night was to do a ScanDisk to check for any problems, but I couldn't stay up to see it complete. When I fell asleep it was on stage 4.
When I awoke, it was on the Blue Screen of Death, stating that there was an issue with the video display and that:
nv4_disp was in an infinite loop

When I ran the scandisk I checked the boxes to fix any problems it came across.
Since I have rebooted this morning, it's been nearly an hour and have not had any issues, but I hardly believe the problem is solved.

Is there an expert that can view my DxDiag and let me know if I have the optimal setup for this system and configuration?
Or let me know what could possibly be the issue?
Or if you see any conflicts or something not setup correctly?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

LOL I tried quoting you but you posted so much info/text plus my post that my info didn't even show so I had to edit my post but anyway read below..

Almost always that error is from driver issues.

You need to get a program called Driver Sweeper by guru 3d located here..
http://www.guru3d.co.../driversweeper/

download and install that program but don't run it yet..

Download the nvidia 180.84 drivers (do a google search) Do not install it yet

Uninstall your OLD Video card drivers using the add/remove programs in control panel.

NOW run the Driver Sweeper program and select the nvidia tab, (If you ever installed any sort of ati drivers click the ATI display tab also).

Now clean and delete those files.

Exit driver sweeper and then install the new 180.84 drivers I had you download.

I would probably make sure to re download directx 9.0c and reinstall over your old directx9.0c as you might have deleted some of those directx files somehow and that could be what is causing your problem also..

Now test the machine..

If you still have the problem Which I hope you don't then look for new mobo chipset drivers from dell and update to the latest version.

It should work after running the driver cleaner program, installing new nvidia drivers, then re install the directx platform..

Good luck!
:)

What that driver cleaner program does is deletes any leftover video display files that might still be hiding on your system somewhere and they can cause many different WEIRD driver problems or display errors on the screen.

LOL, I was wondering what you were trying to say. Thank you very much for the response.

Well, as expected the problems returned fairly shortly after keeping the computer on for a bit this morning. Flickering, cut pixels, followed to the same BSOD.
So I switched over to VGA mode and uninstalled all drivers from the control panel.
Still lines on the screen.
I followed your instructions and everything went according to plan. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem.

I then did another system restore to a few days ago before the problems arose.
And it was at this point that all software issues were put to rest, as it indeed must be a hardware issue now?

It has reached the point now where I'm at minimum pixels with lines in the screen - so this is tough to type over. :)

But the final straw is that now within the Device Manager, the 8800 gtx finally has an ! -- and under Device Status it now reads:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

So, what now appears to be a silly question,
does this mean my graphics card is broken & dead?

This thing is less then 2 years old, wouldn't this be fairly shocking to just die?

This device cannot start (Code 10)

The Code 10 error is most often a result of not having the option "Assign IRQ to VGA" enabled in your motherboards system BIOS.

check that in the bios and post back.

Post a picture of what is happening on your screen a (Screenshot).

SO you are saying the exact same thing happened with 3 other video cards??

keep crashing whenever I surf to websites with too much stuff going on..
luckily it's safe here. I will try out that BIOS change right now...

Actually 3 different video drivers, I only have one video card.

AHH okay on the very first post you said "3 different video cards" so that makes a world of difference now LOL..

Try to get ahold of an old video card or borrow a friends and install it into the mobo. If the problem goes away it is in fact your video card.

To answer your question video cards and all pc hardware can fail within a day to many years after you get it, just depends..

Well it is more than likely the video card now, but do you have an old REGULAR PCI video card laying around in your closet or attic for test purposes?

whoops, sorry about that.
I found an old video card so I'm going to try and throw that in there.
But there are no open slots for it unfortunately, because the 8800 is so big.
Guess I need to take the 8800 out.

Should I not try that BIOS change? I actually could not find it in the BIOS. I saw no mention of IRQ anywhere.

LOL yes always take out the video card that is currently in it as that one can cause issues because it will still try to run that one as the primary..

Did you find a pci video card?

Don't worry about the bios now as everything is different now because we got past the miscommunication..

take out the 8800 then put in the new video card, hook up monitor to it and test in windows.

not sure if it's PCI, or how to tell the difference.
It has 3 prongs to lock itself into a slot, with a backwards L on the end.
The connection for it has 15-holes and it's blue.

Well I hope it is not an AGP video card as that will not fit in your mobo..

You only have the Pci express slot of course and the OLDER regular PCI slots on your mobo.

this is a pci express slot

this is an agp slot the (kinda purplesh color)..

if you cannot figure out what slot it has then you can maybe look up the model # of the video card. Depending on which card and how old (some of them used 2 different slot types) so I can see if I can find out for you..

well, it was an agp, LOL.

While I was finding that out I cleaned the fan on the 8800GTX (an internal fan I had not yet scene), then snapped it back in since I couldn't put in the older video card and don't have any others.

The computer this time started up beautifully, as did the video card. Clear picture at 1900x1200, but that only lasted a minute before it shut itself off and wouldn't start again.

So I guess I'm going to look to have somebody come over with a different video card in order to make sure this thing is dead....
but I think it's safe to say it has to be overheating each time and shutting itself down.

Probably a bad video card that got to hot at one time or it damaged the ram chips on the card etc, you never know. Hardware can fail at any given time.

Well good luck I just wanted to be 100% sure it was infact the video card itself. I figured it was the video card. I could of said right off the bat it was the video card but there is always a slim chance 20% etc or so that it could be something else like the drivers.

I like to troubleshoot first, the computer tech should always do that because (YOU) the customer might end up paying more than you really need on parts for example.

thanks very much for all the help, I appreciate it.

It was certainly the video card, as I got a new one today and everything is running wonderfully.

Just a note, if you register your Nvidia card within 30 days of purchase, it has a lifetime warranty.
So I'll be sending that 8800GTX back to them and will have it sent back fixed or new.

well....

I got a new 9800GTX+, and everything ran smoothly and perfect.
However, the first time I opened a game it crashed due to a graphics driver issue.
I searched around and found evidence that I did not completely remove a previous graphics driver, and was able to locate the registry key and change the name of it. This fixed the problem and I was able to game for over 4 hours with no problems with the best graphics I have ever had. Very proud of myself.

Unfortunately, there still remained one problem. A random crash, although it appears to happen when viewing any type of video -- and happens each time I attempt to watch anything on youtube or attempt to view any pictures on my computer.

The first error I fixed was this:
The NVR0FLASHDev service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I found that specific file and changed the name.

I figured I had caused a new problem so I switched it back, but the new video/picture crash still occurs, and the first problem continued after I changed it back. So I fixed the first problem again-- and the new issue brings about this error message within the event viewer:

Source: nv
Unknown error on CMDre 00000000 00000088 88100060 00000004 00000084

I have found information that this is a driver issue. With my new video card I have gone through five different drivers now -- the original on the disk, Dell recommended, Nvidia recommended, etc, etc.
I believe it must just be another issue of a bad registry key causing a conflict from a previous driver.

Before installing any of these new drivers, I have run DriverSweeper -- so I'm very confused.
I'm still confident that the initial graphics card is dead, and that this new issue is probably something different that is slight and fixable.

My last action now is going to be a complete format and reinstall of the OS, but I'd rather not.
I'm of course worried that this is a mobo issue or memory issue.
