A little over a month ago, I downloaded a windows service pack (big mistake) onto my Dell laptop. My computer went crazy and wouldn't even start up anymore. Windows support helped me get reinstall everything. Now I realized that did not include any of the drivers (my screen didn't look the same, the scroll function didn't work on the mouse). So I found all the other disks and tried to load the drivers one onto my computer. Problem is, the drivers for the CDrom must not be installed either, since it doesn't recognize anything being in the drive.

First, I went to the Dell website to try to download the driver. But when the file opens and I run it, it says "The firmware of the drive will be updated to a new version. Can't find the target drive." There is a drop down menu, but nothing to choose. I tried to call dell, but they're no help unless you spend $200 on a new service contract.

Anyone know what to do?

Optical drives don't need any extra drivers since Windows 2000.
Does the drive recognize any CD?
What exactly doesn't work on your computer?
What Dell model is it?
