Gave my son a SATA DVD Burner (Samsung SH-S223Q) to replace his IDE DVD
reader but after install he gets a boot error:
Diskette drive 0 seek failure
Secondary drive 1 not found
Strike F1/F2 etc...

After F1 the boot continues successfully.

What's wrong? Will IDE and SATA devices co-exist?

The PC is a DELL Dimension 8300 with 2GB. He has an IDE CD burner and an
IDE Hard disk.

The old DVD reader drive is jumpered as a SLave (not sure about CD
burner that's in the PC). Is that maybe where the problem is??

An easy solution to solve Dell issues is to take the side off, find the battery, take it out for a few minutes and leave the system unplugged for ten minutes or so. Pop the battery back in and fire up the computer. It'll then sort out all of the drives, primary, secondary and floppies all on its own, you just have to set the date and time again yourself.
Either that or play about in the BIOS toggling the appropriate options, or let the system do it itself. :)
