Firewalls do not use bandwidth.
They monitor and intercept requests for data either way but most of them don't generate any of their own, unless the program's checking for updates to itself, for example.

to add to Neil Jones reply , firewall is a MUST HAVE
and i agree , they do not waste bandwith , as stated by neil jones... unless they are updating themselves
