mc freezes whenever it is started

I am running vista home premium on a new system with a gigabyte hdmi output motherboard running nvdia drivers. After 2 weeks of trying I found the newest nvdia drivers and have established hdmi video and audio.(I am using a 42 " LCD 1080P for a monitor). My problem is that whenever media center tries to start it freezes, with the HD light on hard but no reading or writing audible. CTRL ALT DEL sometimes brings up task manager but usually a reset is needed. I have 4 gig of ram which has been tested (by windows) Media player and disc player work but not mc. The system is new with a registered copy of home premium with updates , but is not on line as I am restricted to dial up and have this as a multimedia system. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
