I am having a problem with limited or no connectivity hooking directly to a charter cable modem. This is a friends computer that lost internet connectivity over a week ago. It is running XP Home Edition. The computer is connected directly to the cable modem no router involved.

I got on the phone with Charter Tech Support and did the ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew. This did not work. We then unhooked the cable from the modem and repeated the process. It picked up the cable modem ip of 192.168.100.1 at that time. We then reconnected the cable to the modem and repeated the process. The system lost the ip and 169.254.xx.xx was assigned. Charter sent a tech to the house and he worked on the system, changed the modem, etc. Still no luck with accessing the internet. He convinenced me (correctly) that the problem was not theirs. He said it could be spyware or a virus capturing the internet connection. I completely unhooked teh computer and brought it to my house to pull files off of it and re-format everything.

When I hooked the computer into my router and network it works fine. I thought maybe my router was blocking what ever was causing the problem so I hooked the computer directly into my DSL modem with Centurytel. Still the system worked fine. I returned the computer to the friends house and took my laptop along with me to verify that it was not a Charter problem. When I again plugged the problem computer into the Charter system, same problem, limited or no connectivity. Assuming it was Charter's problem, I double checked by un hooking the problem computer, powering down the cable modem and plugged in my lap top. The lap top is able to hook to the modem and works fine no problems what so ever. At this time, I reconnected the problem desktop and ran winsockfix. This did not solve the problem.

Thus I brought the problem Desktop back to my house and proceeded to remove files and complete restored the computer to factory defaults with a destructive restore reformating the hard drive etc. Again before and after the restore the computer hooks to my DSL modem and gains connectivity with no problem, both throught the router and direct to the modem.

I take the computer back and hook it up anticipating it will now be fixed. I connect it to the Charter Cable modem and same problem even after the restore. The laptop continues to run fine on the Charter Cable modem, however when it is disconnected and this desktop is then connected the desktop gets a limited or no connectivity.

I am stumped. I don't know what else to try or what could be causing this problem. I have changed the cables hooking the computer to the modem. The only difference I can think of right now is the laptop is running XP Pro and the desktop is running XP Home. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin

Hey Kevin,

It looks like you've done a good job troubleshooting this so far, and I have to admit you've pretty much done everything that I could think to do. When I started reading the thread, I thought it was going to be a winsock issue, but you stated that you already ran winsockfix, so that should have resolved that. The fact that his desktop connects to your modem/router seems a little odd, as it rules out a faulty NIC.

My first suggestion would be to setup a static IP on his machine, to see if that helps. When you connect your laptop to his modem, please do the following:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type ipconfig /all
  • Note down the following details: IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS Servers (2).
Now, connect his machine to the modem and then goto Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Network Connections --> Right click on your Local Area Connection --> Select Properties --> Click on Internet Protocl (TCP/IP) once and press the Properties button --> Select the option Use the following IP Address: --> Enter in your IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway --> Now select Use the following DNS Servers --> Enter in two DNS Servers (or, if you only have one DNS Server, only enter one, and leave the Alternative blank) --> Press OK.

*Note: If you receive a message about a conflicting IP Address, try changing the last section of the IP, e.g. if you entered 192.168.100.2, change it to 192.168.100.20 and try again.

If he still cannot connect with a static IP, reboot his computer and see if that helps. If not, repeat the steps listed above, and return both of the settings to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically, then restart his machine. Upon reboot, please do the following:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt
  • Navigate to your C: drive and open the text file ipconfig.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.
Also, just to reset the winsock again (can't hurt!):
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type netsh int ip reset reset.log
  • Once the above command completes, type netsh winsock reset catalog
  • Restart your computer.

On the off chance that you read this before then, can you also do the following when you're on his machine -- goto Start --> Run --> type EVENTVWR and press OK --> Now, look under the System log for any errors and/or warnings. If you find any, please post the relevant heading, along with the details inside by double clicking on the error/warning (denoted by a red 'x' and a yellow '!' respectively), and then copy/pasting the information from within.

You'll mainly be looking for errors that occur around the time he tries to connect to his modem; anything with DHCP or TCP will be relevant, but please try to post any errors/warnings that appear, as these may help shed some light on why he isn't connecting.

Also, try booting his computer into Safe Mode with Networking and seeing if he can get a connection, just to rule out software interference -- although this is unlikely since he could connect to your modem.

Thanks,
- Dan

No luck with the suggestions.

So it was the same deal in Safe Mode with Networking?

I don't know if this is possible, but I would love to see if you can get her machine to connect through your router and her modem; would you be able to bring your router over to her place to test this, or do other people use it?

I'm not sure what steps the tech did, but have you powercycled all of her equipment? You could try resetting her DNS settings, although I would be surprised if this is the issue, but it shouldn't hurt.

Reset DNS settings:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type cmd and press OK
  • In the new command prompt window, type ipconfig /flushdns
  • Attempt to connect to the Internet; if you are not able to, restart your computer. Upon reboot, if you still cannot connect to the Internet, open a new command prompt window and type ipconfig /registerdns -- attempt to connect to the Internet; are you able to? If not, restart your computer and try again.
Have you tried re-installing her adapter, as there may be some corrupt settings in the card -- if you have the adapter's drivers CD, then please give it a go. Before you do this, I would suggest disconnecting the Ethernet cable from both the modem and her computer, and then unplugging the power from the modem, and leaving it off whilst you perform the steps below.
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type devmgmt.msc and press OK
  • In the new window, please expand Network Adapters
  • In the list of adapters, right-click on her adapter and select Uninstall.
  • Restart the computer. Once the computer reboots, Windows should automatically detect New Hardware and prompt you to install the drivers; please do so.
Once the adapter is installed, turn off the machine, then plug the power back into the modem; wait two minutes for it to startup properly. Once it has booted up, proceed to connect the Ethernet cable to the computer and modem, and then switch the computer on. See if you can get a connection going.

Can you please list the make and model of both her modem, and yours.

This is a friends computer that lost internet connectivity over a week ago.

Did anything special happen around the time she lost her Internet? Virus? Change of hardware? Over-clocking? Windows update?

I don't think this is a duplexing issue, but I'm running out of ideas here, so we'll give it a shot. Before changing her Duplex mode, make sure you note down what it is set at (usually it is Auto). Goto Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Network Connections --> Right-click your Local Area Connection --> Select Properties --> Press the Configure... button, next to your NIC --> Select the Advanced tab --> Under Property, select Media Type --OR-- Link speed/Duplex Mode --OR-- Network Link Selection, Connection Type, Duplex Mode, or any similarly-named property which can have Values looking like Auto-Negotiation, or 10BT, or 10BaseT. --> Now you'll see the Value: -- this will tell you what Duplex it is set at. In the Value box, select a value which either (a) explicitly says half-duplex or semi-duplex, or (b) at least does not say full-duplex [e.g. 10BaseT on its own is OK]. If there is a choice between 10 and 100 with half-duplex, choose the 10. Do not choose 10Base5, 10Base2, or AUI.

Dan,

I found the Dump DNS commands while reading on another some posts other users have posted. I haven't tried yet, but will. I believe it would be pretty easy to take my router to her place and have thought of that, or just going and buying a new one for her place which I have considered.

I did try the uninstalling of the ethernet adapter, but I did it through windows Device Manager. I also last night had it hooked to my system and did a Windows update of the Ethernet driver. It stated I the best one was already installed. I searched on the net for her ethernet card (SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter) and found a driver download which I installed. Still no luck so I will try it with your method.

As for anything special that happened. I believe her Internet service was down for a couple of days which I believe triggered this problem. I will have to try all this, it will probably be Thursday Morning before I get a chance to do so. On another board a gentleman suggested the last entry with the Duplex.

I do have a question. I have two Desktops that I use here at my house plus a work laptop and she now has my personal laptop. Do you think, since her Ethernet card works on my system, it would be of any benefit to swap ethernet cards with one of my desktops?

If the swapping of the ethernet cards could solve this problem, that would be an easy thing to do. What is your opinion? Thank you so much for your help. It is very much appreciated.

Yes, swapping the Ethernet cards would definitely be a good idea, if that is a possibility, since her card seems to have no issues within your network environment. I had hoped that re-installing the Ethernet card, and powercycling her modem at the same time might get it going. Also, I have a feeling throwing a router into the mix would also help, but I would suggest trying your router first before spending any money on a new one. The problem seems to be directly linked to her Ethernet card and the modem; since any other combination seems to be working, swapping the cards would more than likely resolve her connection issue.

Just for feedback purposes, I would love to see if resetting the DNS settings, changing the duplex setting, or adding your router to the mix corrects the issue, but I will understand if you don't want to waste time doing this.

Either way, please let me know the final results, or on the off-chance that the issue isn't resolved, let me know.. I might think of a few more things :)

Dan,

I will jerk the ethernet card out of one of mine and take it and the computer back on Thursday morning. Before I install the new Ethernet card I will try resetting the DNS and changing the duplex settings.

Now the router thing. It has been 3 years since I set up my router. I am trying to remember, would I need to restore it to factory defaults, etc then hook it up to her modem? I will try and do that as well before swapping the cards. You have helped me enough, I would like to see if we can get this resolved to determine the cause for future use. Again, I really appreciate all the help you have provided.

I'm just thinking that if you reset the DNS settings, uninstall her ethernet card and powercycle her modem, it should reset everything back to their defaults, and thus, in theory, allow a connection. But it wouldn't be the first time technology has failed to adhere to my flawless logic.

You wouldn't have to reset your router to factory defaults; it should work "as is". The best way to add a router to the mix is as follows:
  • Turn off all computers.
  • Unplug the power from your modem.
  • If you have plugged power into your router, unplug it now -- if you have not plugged power into your router yet, leave it that way.
  • Wait two minutes.
  • Connect your modem to your router with an Ethernet cable.
  • Connect your router to your PC with an Ethernet cable.
  • Plug the power back into your modem and wait for it to start up (this can take up to two minutes).
  • Plug the power into your router and wait for it to start up (this can take up to two minutes).
  • Turn your PC on.
*NOTE: If you do not get a connection, it may be necessary to run the Network Setup Wizard.
If you can't connect to the Internet through a router, then remove it from the mix and try your Ethernet card in her machine. Once you have the Ethernet adapter installed, run the Network Setup Wizard again, but select This computer connects directly to the Internet instead of This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway.

And hopefully, that will be that -- she'll be connected. Fingers crossed :)

I am interested in what became of this situation. I have a very very similar situation, even with the same warning errors you listed, and it started when my provider had "node" problems for a few days. I cannot attain a connection without repairing or waiting for my computer to obtain the correct IP after about 7 or 8 minutes. Comcast has provided
no help because the techs computer worked fine on my network. Our other computer connected to the same wired router is fine.

At the exact same time these new connection issues arose weeks ago, they (Comcast) had a node problem that has now been fixed. Ever since then I cannot get out on the net with any consistency. No matter what page I request, or what time of day I can get about 3 requests out of 10. All others say 404, strange characters, timeout, page not found, check your internet connections, etc. They sit and spin and spin and stay white. This has been happening for 17 days! Every single scan I have run says I am clean including HJT. I have this problem on AOL browser and Opera. I was doing nothing but surfing the web when it started to happen. I am the only user and there was a marked slow down and indescriminate stoppage of most web pages.

When I click submit, this page may sit and spin for minutes or hours if I would let it. I will click it many times to try to get it to connect. I hope it doesn't load several times. If so, I am sorry.

And also safe mode with networking does not fix this problem.

Please help ----Cheryl

Sorry for the delay in replying.

I was not able to fix the problem with everything Dan and I tried to do. I ended up putting a new Ethernet card into the computer and that solved the problem. I have disabled the old ethernet card. I do not understand what caused the problem, but a new ethernet card did fix the problem.

Dan thanks for all your help.
