XP Service Pack 2

Windows Update is set on Automatic.

When I shut down the shut down icon indicated an update will be installed if I shut down. I select shut down windows, but the file doesn't install.

I'm not at my home computer, but I'll be able to post the windowsupdate.log file tonight.

Thanks.

I've been holding off on Service Pack 3 because I'm afraid it might hose my system.

That log does me no good because I can not understand it. Maybe someone else can.

What is the actual name on the update? The KB number?

I'm not sure The number of the update because it was downloaded automatically. When I select <Start> <Turn off computer>
the Turn of Computer window comes up and the center icon <Turn Off> has a small windows icon at the top right corner. When I click on the icon windows attempts to install the update, but when I turn the system back on the update hasn't installed.

Lets reset the way the updates come down. I never let the updates install automatically.

Go to start/ control panel/ system and click on the tab for automatic updates.

Check the box "notify me but don't automatically install"

When the update comes down, you will get a notification icon by the clock.
Click on custom and this will allow you to look at the update.

I turned off automatic updates.

After reviewing the log file I believe this is the update that's not installing:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430)


It is in the log on several days and it doesn't show up in "add remove programs" in Control Panel.

This is a known issue so I've contacted Microsoft for free assistance.

This did the trick:

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
2. At the command prompt, type ren %windir%\System32\msxml4.dll msxml4.old, and then press ENTER.

Note After you press ENTER, you may receive the following error message.
Cannot find the file specified.
Ignore this message, and go to step 3.
3. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER.
4. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

5. Download and then install the latest MSXML security update.
