Hello everyone, I as stated in the title I'm having connection problems with a Siemens Gigaset SE567 (if I remember correctly) our ISP provided us when we signed up for DSL last June, and although I haven't been here in a while, I'm hoping (expecting) G2G to be of help. Typically we have 1-3 laptops or game systems using it over Wi-Fi and one desktop connected to it directly. A few days ago, the PC (HP Pavilion with Vista) directly connected to it simply stopped loading web pages/emails/anything on the internet, but wireless is still working fine (thankfully). Here's a list of things we've tried so far (in no particular order, which is why some of the steps don't seem logical ):

• Connecting a laptop to it with a different cable and a different browser, which had the same problem
• Updating network drivers
• Contacting ISP, which although we tried a lot things over the course of an hour or so, didn't help us
• Pinging the router and websites, which both work (which made me especially confused )
• Opening the "router management interface", no luck
• Setting up a static IP and other DNS servers, which also didn't work

I think that pretty much sums it up. This is driving me crazy, as I'm not experienced enough with networking to figure out just where the problem is (if I had to guess, I'd say the ports on the back of the modem/router, but the PCs do detect the connection).

I should also mention, although earlier that day we'd uninstalled the Norton Antivirus the Desktop had come with and installed AVG Free (free is given multiple meanings when it replaces Norton ) and Spybot S&D, everything worked fine most of the day after that, and since the laptop has the same problem, I don't think those are affecting anything.

Hope you can save us some frustration (and money, as I don't want to go replacing things without being sure they're broken) by helping troubleshoot the problem.

EDIT: I can't try what Dan suggested until tomorrow so I'm not going to bother posting, but for clarification this Desktop always connects directly, and has no Wi-Fi connection. This shouldn't affect things, but of course anyone who tries to help will like as much information as available on the problem. Also, I'm simply using the built in Wireless router and ethernet ports on the modem with no separate router.

First of all, hard-wire your PC to your router, and then disable your wireless connection. Ensure that your wireless is not active for the duration of these tests. Please do the following:

• Select Run
• Type cmd and press OK
• In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take about 20 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one. Also, the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
  • ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
  • ping localhost >> C:\ results.txt
  • ping google.com >> C:\ results.txt
  • ping 209.85.171.100 >> C:\ results.txt
• Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.

I would suggest a power-cycle just to ensure all of your equipment is in-sync.

• Turn off all computers/devices that are connected to your router.
• Unplug the power from your modem.
• Unplug the power from your router.
• Wait two minutes.
• Plug your modem's power back in; wait for your modem to boot up (this can take up to two minutes).
• Plug your router's power back in; wait for your router to boot up (this can take up to two minutes).
• Turn on your computers/devices.

Any change on the hard-wired front?

Although I don't think this is a Norton issue, just to be safe please download and run the Norton Removal Tool -- once it is finished, restart your computer.

Aside from a ridiculously convoluted ipconfig, everything seems A-OK I wouldn't be buying a new router, if I were you -- it looks to me like you're connecting fine with your existing hardware. Let's try do a little 'spring cleaning' on your network connections.

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
• In the new window, right-click on your Local Area Connection and select Properties.
• In the This connection uses the following items section, remove the tick beside (i.e. disable) Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then press OK.

• Press Start
• In the Start Search field type devmgmt.msc and then press the ENTER key.
• In the Device Manager, select View and then Show hidden devices
• Expand Network adapters
• In the list, you should see a whole bunch of isatap.{letters/numbers}
• You have two options; you can either right-click on each, and select Disable, or select Uninstall. On all of my Vista machines, I have uninstalled them and never had an issue. You're more than welcome to simply disable them for now, however understand that they may still cause issues. My recommendation would be to uninstall them.

Once you have done the above things, please restart your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. Can you connect to the Internet in safe mode? If not, reboot your computer back in normal mode, and please post a new ipconfig /all.

Thank you very much Dan one last thing: I happened to have the Norton remover handy so I ran it in safe mode too, do you still think it was the clean up or could our unwelcome house guest Mr. Norton have been causing it after all? I kind of wish I'd been thinking and don it separately, but I guess it's fixed either way

I'd say it was Norton; the only reason I didn't think it was Norton at the start was because I misinterpreted your post and thought that machine could connect fine via wireless. After seeing you getting a fine connection, I thought it was some form of software interference (but I had thought you'd already run the Norton tool by then), so the Safe mode step was to check for other interference. I'm not sure why you weren't able to connect in Safe Mode with Networking -- Norton shouldn't have been active at that stage.

But either way, the 'spring cleaning' was mainly so that I wouldn't have to scroll down a 'bazillion' pages just to respond
