Hard Disc Showing Memory Full

I have an external hard disc of 250gb capacity which has about 160gb free space. However, when i tried to transfer a movie that is 8gb in size it shows that there is not enough space in my hard disc. But when i tried transferring other files of much bigger sizes they transfer without any problem. What could be the reason behind this and how do i solve this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
