IE, my comp, my docs etc wont open

Hi there, my friend is running on Win 98SE and her IE has gone dodgy.... She has AOL so can still browse the net, but anything to do with IE or opening any files at all, wont work, and she gets an error message something like "Internet Explorer has performed an illegal operation and has had to close". I managed to get into her Control Panel via the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, and have repaired IE, to no avail... I also downloaded an update from the MS website, again nothing... I have updated and ran her antivirus, anti spyware, got rid of all the junk on her PC (she had 7 toolbars on IE) cannot find anything else, but still we cant get into her files.... Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
