Hello,

I have Comcast and McAfee Security Center. McAfee reports that Generic!Artemis exists somewhere on my computer, but it's unable to remove it. It is nowhere to be found in the Add/Remove Program list. I have read other posts with the exact same problem. I have followed the instructions under the Malware Removal Guide and I'm still experiencing problems. The issue is when I use Firefox, I keep gettting redirected to a website I didn't request to go to. Please find the attached hijackthis log. Your help is much appreciated!

Hi cafelena,

Welcome to the forums here at G2G and sorry for the delay.

Question, does McAfee give you any details about what it finds? File name? Location? Ect...? If so please provide. Let's do some cleanup and run MalwareBytes'.

First, use Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files,
cookies, cache, ect...

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.

The graphic you provided shows that is in a restore point. Those can be cleared out better resetting your system restore.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We can also get another opinion and run a different scan.
I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
    files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
    * Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    * Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    * Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in
your reply.
If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%
Where did you get this?
D:\dl [bleep]\Adobe.CS3 Super Keygen Collection
I would advise you to remove it as soon as possible. The whole folder.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Other than that, how's it running?

:) I don't know, I don't recognize this stuff. I've removed the entire folder with the infected contents and I'm washing the folder to remove all remnants.

To answer your question on how everything is running... McAfee hasn't reported the Generic Artemis file in awhile, but I don't know whether it was removed or not. While waiting for a response from my first post, I tried a number of things from other posts to see if something would help remove it and perhaps it did. When you replied, I followed all your instructions. Still no G. Artemis warnings have been reported. However, I'm still getting redirected to other sites though... Is this redirection caused by either Generic Artemis or Trojan.Win32.Monderc?

I predominantly use Firefox. I had uninstalled Firefox earlier this week and reinstalled it to see if this would help. It seemed to for a little while, then all of a sudden when I do a search on any subject, I get redirected to another website when I click the Next page at the bottom of the search results. I get redirected after 3 pages in. I haven't noticed this problem with IE.

It may be Goored...

Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called Goored.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.

Great, glad that got it. A few things to finish off....

Click Start >> Run and then copy/paste the following into the box and hit Enter:
"%userprofile%\Desktop\GooredFix.exe" /uninstall
If any of your security programs query a new Registry/AutoStart value being added please allow the changes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run HijackThis. (Vista users, please right click on HijackThis.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on this:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {493a1467-514c-400c-94d4-9ba279e1ea61} - (no file)
Then close all windows except HijackThis and press Fix checked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Your version of Java is outdated.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
Accept any prompts.
Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Post back with a new HijackThis log and update me on how it's running.

Okay, yes, looks like the old Java version is still there. Here are detailed instructions on removing and installing a new version. This way does not use the JavaRa program.

Update Java Runtime:

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")
See if that helps, and post a new log.
