Please download and run ATF Cleaner. This will clean out your temporary files.

How much RAM do you have? You can find this out by right clicking on "My Computer" and clicking on "Properties." Windows XP really needs at least 512MB, preferably 1GB of RAM.

Have you defragmented the hard drive recently? You can do this by going to "Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>System Tools=>Disk Defragmenter"

In addition to what jt1990 said, this article has some more things you can try.

What makes your machine slow? by Artellos

Also, www.crucial.com has an excellent Memory Advisor Tool or an Online Scanner to let you know what amount of RAM you have and what kind you need to buy. I recommend the Memory Advisor Tool.

Do try to run Disk Cleanup before doing a Disk Defragmentation.

I've found that ATF Cleaner works much better then the Windows Disk Cleanup.
