DirectX 9.0 compatible graphics adapter

I know you will probably have heard this complaint before, but I should like some information, based on the following info.

I've installed The Sims 2. Everything is fine until I get the following message on load-up: DirectX 9.0 compatible graphics adapter, etc.

So I download DirectX 9.0 and check that my computer has indeed been updated. It has. Yet, the game doesn't work. So I check my graphics adapter which is: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT. I then look that up and apparently it is compatible with DirectX 9.0 but still, the game doesn't work.

Can anyone help make sense of this?
