Hi guys and gals - please excuse my ignorance if it occurs.

I am running a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop with Vista.

All of a sudden I was having issues with it the other day - I noticed that my Norton would pick up 'Packed.Genric 200' and says it has been deleted - but this comes up almost everytime i load the computer.

Also - i get error messages saying 'Quickset has stopped working' and 'Host process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed'

Of note, sometimes my audio devices will stop working, and my windows security will have settings turned off....basically lots of weird stuff is happening....

Any help as to how to solve this issue is much appreciated.

I contacted Dell who had a basic plan of doing a system restore point (i tried several dates) but none of this worked - and they basically said I would need to re-load windows - but surely there is another way?

Please help - I have been trying to solve this for about 6 hours.

Cheers and any help is much appreciated.
