Hi! I've read a few posts regarding this problem and was wondering if anyone could assist me. At startup, my IE automatically goes to a site named quicknavigate.com that offers "spy removal" software. Also, my system tray displays warnings about connection speed, spyware and fake system critical messages. Also, a popup will appear from time to time advertising casino sites, vitamins, etc.

I've run AOL's spyware, a Mcafee virus scan and adware all to no avail. Below is the log from hijackthis:

Hi there and welcome to GeeksToGo. My name is Kat, and I will be helping you to get fixed up and on the go. I am analyzing your log now, and will have a response with steps for you to follow in a little while! Please be patient while I check on a couple of things. There's one thing I'm seeing in your log that I want to double check on before I tell you how to fix it. It may take me a little while, but I promise to get back to you sometime this afternoon! :tazz:

1. You have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

2. Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if still found).

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE166.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe
After that, Reboot.

3. Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update

Hi Kat,

No problems downloading About:Buster and CWShredder, but I can't seem to access Cleanup. At the download page, anytime I try to download from http://downloads.ste...p/Cleanup40.exe or http://downloads.ste.../Cleanup320.exe I'm brought to a suspicious looking "404 error" page obviously acting as spyware. Is there another location to download Cleanup? And, is it possible that my infection is aware of cleanup and trying to delibrately keep from downloading it?

In the meantime, I'll install the other programs.

Thanks again!

There is the correct link. I'm sorry about that!

As soon as I see the new log, there is another infection you have we need to tackle! :tazz:

Hi again Kat,

Found another link for cleanup earlier this evening and was able to download the latest version. I'm about 70% done with the ewido security run and will post the results when done.

Speak to you in a bit!

I've (finally!) completed each of the steps with the ewido security suite taking up the bulk of the time. The "quicknavigate.com" url still appears when IE is launched, but I'm assuming there's another problem in there?

Also, when I launched DWShredder it said that coolwebsearch was not found on my system.

Below are the logs from ewido & HJT:

I didn't download ewido security suite until after I had completed steps 1 & 2. Did I re-enable the spyware by going online again?

Thanks again Kat!

Take a deep breath now Parker. I had to giggle at the title of your thread. quicknavigate.com is NOT "old" :tazz: In fact, it is so new that the entire fix has just been completed in the past few days by the Experts of the Spyware removal industry. I know these guys and gals pretty well, and I'm very confident what I have here for you will work. It my look tricky, but once you read thru it and take your time to follow it all in order, you will see that we will have you nearly 100% back to normal. We *may* have a couple of HJT entries to remove, but that should be it! Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

Press CTRL ALT DELETE to open Windows Task Manger. Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

popuper.exe
msole32.exe
shnlog.exe
intmonp.exe
intmon.exe

Exit Task Manager.

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Unzip it to the desktop.

* Please run Killbox.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing CTRL + C:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpE166.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

Open Notepad. Copy EVERYTHING in the box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the 'Save As Type' to "All Files" and save it as fix.reg on your desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4:

I wasn't sure if quicknavigate.com was new or not, but I saw many people posting (especially in the last 24 hours) that I figured you guys were sick of seeing it! ;)

Anyway, I'm at the preliminary step (deleting processes in Windows Task Manager) and have stumbled upon a possible problem. intmon.exe does not want to delete or "end" it's process! ewido will pop up everytime I try to delete it. Should I proceed anyway?

Oh, and I wasn't able to find searchmaid or any of the other programs in the add/delete programs in the control panel, but I'm assuming this is probably OK.

Isn't this fun, Kat? :tazz:

ok Parker. If you have not continued on yet, then I want you to throw away the other instructions, and use these instead. :tazz: if you have already gone on...it's ok. Just finish what you can and paste me a new log and we'll go from there, ok?

Don't worry if you can't find some of the files that lists. that's ok. each infection is slightly different. what the Experts have done is to list ALL known associated files..just to make sure we wipe this sucker out! ;)

and yes....it actually IS fun. Frustrating at times, to be sure. But a lot of fun...and very rewarding when I can close a thread b/c it has been resolved!

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download SmitFraud Reg to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

I think you're good to go!

Congratulations! :tazz: Your log is clean! ;)
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
