Hi,

Thanks to Geeks we have just finished getting rid of a virus and as I had no DVD autorun/play I was advised to do the following:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then click System.
3. In the Settings pane, right-click Turn on Autoplay, and then click Properties.
5. Click OK to close the Turn off Autoplay Properties dialog box.
6. Restart the computer.

When I typed in Gpedit.msc into the Run box and pressed ok an error message popped up saying that
Windows could not find it and was I sure that I had typed in the name correctly and to do a Searc.

I then tried it in Search using Local Disc and My Computer settings but no go.

Help.

gpedit.msc is only available by default in XP Professional. It is not a part of XP Home.

Have you tried going into My Computer... right click on dvd\cd player.... properties
Then clicking on Autorun tab.. see if you can enable it thru there by telling it what type of file to autorun?

Hi all and thanks for the replies.

Broni's 'fix' allows DVD to autorun/play but the USB Flash Drive does not.

See photo for the USB settings. But no matter what setting I use it always says Music files when I reopen Properties.

Hi,

Just for the [bleep] of it I plugged in one of the external drives and it actually autoran/played.

(Apologies, it seems I used a naughty word)

I then took it out and plugged in the Flash Drive and it still won't autorun/play.

So the problem appears to be in the Flash Drive. It will take a day or so to back it up and then what are my options?

Are you saying you have data on the flash drive? I thought you mentioned it was empty.

If you can access flash drive manually, back up your data, and try to format it.
If that doesn't work...oh well...what is it? Like $15 for 8GB flash?

Hi,

1/ I have four Flash drives, one has data and three are empty. None of them will autorun/play.

I tried them all on a friend's computer and they all autoran/played

I re-formatted all of them but they still will not autorun/play on my system but they did on my friend's computer

2/ I agree that they are cheap enough to buy but if they run on another computer why not mine?

It's not the expense but the problem. I can operate the computer but I joined the Geeks for help and to learn.

Try Kellys, lines 388, and 400... left side of the screen. You could also try TweakUI(XP)... in my signature. TweakUI is basically an interface for registry editing and there's a menu item you can check/change for Autoplay.

Have you run chkdsk yet on your computer...
Start>run... type chkdsk /f ,then click ok
You will get a message that chkdsk cannot run at the moment and it will ask if you want to run chkdsk at next startup... just confirm "y" , and restart your machine.

Hi,

I ran chkdsk on the computer.

Rebooted it and it ran the chkdsk

When it got to the end it then went into a normal Start Up.
