Hope you can help - having a big problem with my daughter's laptop. She is running Windows XP and for the past 3 days, it is running very very slow and it freezes up to the point where you cannot open any programs at all. You cannot even use control-alt-delete to shut down. I cannot run any virus scans or malware removal programs simply because we can't get anything to run at all. Windows boots up but that is about all. If a program does open up, freezes up within a few moments and you can't do anything else.
on another note - and I am not certain if this is at all related, but we got notification from our internet provider that within the past few days we have been majorly exceeding our bandwidth limitations. Could this be a virus on her machine which is jamming things up and using bandwidth? I am sending this from my computer simply because hers is unusable as of now. Any advice?
here is the Hijackthis log:

Hi there and sorry for the delay

I would like you to download and transfer to the infected computer the following programme. If you are using a thumb/usb drive then please run this programme first on the uninfected host computer

  • 1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from here and save it to your desktop.
    [list]
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you run it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

THEN FOR THE INFECTED SYSTEM

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.

I am having difficulty installing the Flash Drive dinsinfector. I am getting an "access denied" error - I was trying to run it on my uninfected computer and then transfer it to her computer which is the one with the issues. Can I just try and run it on her computer directly. It is still running very slow, but I think I can get it to run some programs if I am patient as long as it does not freeze up.
Or should I just skip that step and go on to the Dr. Web Curelt step

Please advise - thank you so much

Also forgot to mention that when i was trying to run the Flash Disinfecto, my McAfee program kept detecting a TROGAN and removing it. Not sure what the deal with that was. thanks again

Go straight to the Dr Web step please

The trojan detected is a false positive on the flash disinfector

No thats OK if that was the only problem it found, I needed to run that check as there is a virus that would need you to reformat... But you do not have that one :)

OK lets get my removal tools up and running now

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

I am sorry it is taking me so long to complete this Combo Fix step. I attempted it last evening. I was able to download and begin to run the program It went through a series of steps of scanning. It got to where it said Step 50 completed, but then it just hung there. it did nothing else and the whole system was basically frozen. I had to shut the whole computer down. I attempted to try again today, but the computer just freezes up. I can't get web pages to load or anything. I am not sure if there are any options at this point for a system that is so slow it just hangs. I had to send this reply from another computer. :)

OK lets approach this in a different way

Restart the computer and then use system restore to go to an earlier time, if you are unable to do that then restart and keep pressing F8 till you get a menu then select safe mode. Retry Combofix and ignore any complaints it may make about safe mode

OK this is weird as I can see no apparent malware. Let me take a deeper look, dependant on how your machine is running this may appear to be non-responsive, but give it at least 10 minutes to run. Also how does the system behave in Safe mode - is it still slow ?

To ensure that I get all the information this log will need to be attached (instructions at the end) if it is to large to attach then upload to Mediafire and post the sharing link.

Download OTScanit2 to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanit folder and double-click on OTScanit.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All Users
  • Check the Radio button for Rootkit check YES
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • File - Lop Check
    • File - Purity Scan
    • Evnt - EventViewer Errors/Warnings (last 10)
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Well, after all that the issue is resolved. Once you said you detected no malware, I decided to explore some of the programs running on the computer. I removed a few suspect ones that were running and that seemed to be using a lot of CPU's and I deleted some temp files and just tweaked things up a bit and lo and behold it is working perfectly for now. There was something that got installed called Viewpoint Media player and that seemed to be the suspicious one that was bogging the system down. I apologize for the time you spent trying to help me. I was so certain this mess was caused by a trojan or virus of some kind. I am relieved to know it was not.

Thank you again - you guys are the best :)

No problem I am just glad you are now happy

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..Run OTScanit and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

XP
Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.
