I have wasted two days trying to work out my networking problems. I had this working in the past, but then decided to mess with things and try to share an internet connection. Bad idea - I should have left well enough alone. I have a D-link router DI-624, that is wired to my XP computer, then I have a vista laptop that is wireless. My internet connection is with a tethered cell phone as a modem, and I don't care now if I ever get that shared I just want my file sharing and printer sharing back. This is really confusing. I have tried everything that I have found suggested on various websites and forums. I have both computers on the same workgroup, I have tried with having the properties set to obtain an IP address automatically and then I could ping the Vista computer from the XP, but not the XP from the Vista. I was worried that the IP of the XP (192.168.0.100) was too close to that of the router - default gateway (192.168.0.1) so I tried to assign it (192.168.0.200) and then I could ping both ways. I don't know to leave this or put it back to to obtain automatically? When I look at the full map under network and internet on the vista computer I see the toshiba (vista) connected wirelessly to the DLink, then I see the Destop(XP) connected to a switch and then the Dlink. However, when I go to view computers and devices I only see the toshiba and the dlink - I can not get to the desktop(XP). I have messed with file sharing, turned off firewalls, and I do have the Link-Layer Topology installed for the XP computer. One thing that I do notice and I don't know if this is valid or not - on the vista computer Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is not checked when I check it and try to look at properties it says that in order to cofigure TCP/IP, you must intall and enable a network adapter card. Not sure that this means - as everything worked three days ago before silly me tried to mess with stuff.
I even installed a program called Network Magic - there I can see a map with both the vista and xp computer on the network but I can't share files. Oh - I know that both are connect to the network - because I also have a tivo and seperatly both the XP and the Vista computers can access the tivo. It just seems like there is something big blocking them from each other. Here is the ipconfig for the XP machine: (I will have to log back on the vista computer to get that info):

I want to include any info that I can think might be helpful - but I am not an expert on networking. Oh one more thing - on the xp computer under network connection there is on called internet connection and it is connected and I can't get it to disable. It says that this cinnection allows you to connect to the Internet through a shared connection on another computer - but I don't have anything like that - I am not sure if this is messing stuff up or not?

I am very frustrated and I would really like to get this problem fix. Any help would really be welcomed. Thanks!!!!

Yes, you did the right thing.

Below I'm going to post some steps for you to perform (I'll post a Vista and XP version of the same steps) -- please perform these steps on any of the machines which are having file sharing issues, and post the results. Please label each of the logs accordingly (ie. Vista desktop/laptop, XP desktop/laptop, etc).

Step 1a - File Sharing Troubleshooting (Windows XP):

• Press Start
• Select Run
• Type cmd and press OK
• In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: the single '>' and double '>>' are intentional; please type the commands exactly as they appear):
  • ipconfig /all > C:\results.txt
  • net view >> C:\results.txt
  • net share >> C:\results.txt
  • nbtstat -n >> C:\results.txt
• Once the above commands have completed, navigate to your C: drive and open the text file results.txt -- please copy/paste the contents of this file into your next response.

Yippy - it works. I don't know why, it is so flaky. Now I am scared to restart the computers or turn on the firewall - but I know I have to try. Just all of a sudden I could see the computer on each other, and the print sharing is working too. I want to try to uninstall the Network magic program cause it was only a seven day free trial just hope that doesn't mess things up. Thanks for helping.

That's great to hear -- it's likely that re-enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP may have resolved your issue. If you do lose connectivity once you re-enable your firewall, then it's a simple matter of adding your machines IP's to your firewalls trusted zones.
