is it safe re-installing windows?

i want to re-install windows xp as i am having troubles with the automatic updates which occurred when i first installed windows.
just want to know if this is safe?
and also i am wondering if it is ok if i used a friends xp disc.... will this cause any problems or should i use my own

as long as you have a LEGAL license key of your own and it matches the version of windows that your friend's disk is for (i.e. sp1 or sp2, retail or OEM etc..)...if you've got your original disk it's best to use it
