I have windows vista and it was running great until today when i installed pctools and when I restarted my computer; i logged in and then the screen was completley black, all i could see was my cursor for about 1 minute and then my tool bar showed up and teh backround came up for a quick second and then the backround went white ( i could still see my toolbar) and then all the icons came up and it probably loaded for about 1-2 minutes and then everything was back to normal. I've scanned my computer many times and found 0 infections. Why is it running so slow?? :)

I personally would not recommend running any of that software from pctools...

Ive heard alot about spyware doctor

EG: reporting false positives... ( higher " Detection " to increase the chance of the user buying the software )

I recommend avast ... ( Free and does a good job )

having said that , try this... click on start ( bottom left of the screen ) then go to " run " type in " Msconfig " ( without quotes " )

select the " start-up " tab and locate spyware doctor and anything related to it and untick the box

apply the changes and restart the computer

If the computer starts and runs normal i suggest uninstalling spyware doctor...

Best Of Luck

Hello reservoirdog111

Maybe let me rephrase "select the " start-up " tab and locate spyware doctor and anything related to it and untick the box

Select everything if you have desktop computer , if LAPTOP dont untick /uncheck any items relating to the operation of the computer ! , eg: if toshiba laptop , dont disable any items with toshiba :)

Also go to "Services Tab ", tick the box "Hide all microsoft services " , then un check all items , with laptop do not disable any items relating to the computer system !

IF you are running a custom firewall ( NOT Windows ! ) windows firewall should be turned on as the firewall will not be active at this point...

Reboot the computer , and notice performance... Any improvement ???

Best of luck !!!

Edited: Added more information :)

PS:To turn on Windows Firewall
Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Windows Firewall.
Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Thanks, I tried not including it in startup and it helped a little, but still no major improving. I think I might have just installed too much stuff so I don't have much memory left, not sure though. I learned to deal with it, if it means having a safe computer. I know there's no viruses on it or stuff like that because I've scanned it with multiple types of antiviruses but it showed up clean. Who knows, Thanks for your help though!

How much RAM do you have ???

press and hold down the windows key ( on keyboard ) , the one that has the windows logo printed onto it... then press pause break key

You should have a window pop-up with system properties

If not...

Click " Start " then right click on " My computer " select properties

Down the bottom section should display the amount of RAM

Thank you

Edited : More info Added :)

PS: Might be worth wild you viewing this post done by Artellos @ http://www.geekstogo...ow-t210685.html

Might give you some good tips and tricks to speed your machine up :)

PSS: i had a slow " Starting up " computer

To speed up the time to load the computer to desktop i done the following

Start > run > Type: Msconfig slect boot.ini tab , then check box " NOGUIBOOT " , apply changes , reboot computer...

Iam on XP OS , you however are on vista...

No GUI is one of the tweak one can do to speed up the boot time on a slow Vista Machine

But one side effect of enabling "No GUI boot", would be the slow startup when the Vista Machine had to startup in "Safe Mode"

Best of luck, Hope all goes well !
