Well isn't that interesting. Should have looked there earlier. Lets see if I can remember this correctly.

Ok lets go back into Network Properties in Control Panel and remove NOC Extranet Access Client Protocol and TCP/IP[Home] by highlighting them one at a time and clicking Remove. Put your 98 cd in the drive if prompted. Restart the pc.

We need to have your network adapter, a client and TCP/IP installed to connect to the net. Go back to Network in Control Panel. Put your 98 cd in the drive. Click Add below the box in Network Properties. In the next box highlight Client and in the next box select Client for Microsoft Networks and click ok or add. Next click Add again and this time select Protocol and in the next box select TCP/IP and click add or ok (can't remember which it is ). Restart the pc. If it wants to restart between adding the client and the protocol go ahead.

Hopefully you should be able to connect now. If not, go back to Network Properties and let me know what you see now. You should see TCP/IP-->Linksys LNE100TX[v5] Fast Ethernet Adapter. Highlight TCP/IP and click Properties and ensure that Obtain an IP address automatically is checked.

You are not using a router?

I'm curious, was this pc used in a work environment at one time?

In review, when I go back into "Network", "Configuration" I receive a notice, listed as "Network", "Your network is not complete. Do you want to continue?". Whether I select "Yes", or "No" nothing else happens. I was not prompted to insert the Windows disk
I tried to access the Internet, via the "SBC Yahoo!DSL" icon, on my desktop and its opens to the "Sign In", as normal. without any annoying messages. When I select "Sign In", I receive the message, "SBC Yahoo! DSL, Unable to connect to the server. Please check your connection before trying again". I then tried to open the IE6 icon, on my desktop, but receive the "This page can not be displayed."
Note: I now notice that I only have only three modem lights are lit: "Power", "Ethernet" and "DSL". The "Internet" and "Activity" lights are not on, or blinking.
Ooops! I got excited for a moment, because things were looking normal again, but I realized that I forgot to follow the rest of your instructions.
Completed all your instuctions, but never once did it ask for the Windows disk to be installed.
Now in the "Network" box, under the tab, "Configuration", is listed:
"Client for Microsoft Networks"
"Linksys LNE100TX[v5[ Fast Ethernet Adapter"
"TCP/IP"
NOw when I selected "OK", it asked for the Windows disk.
When it started running, it stated that the file(s) on the disck were older than the existing files, probably for two files and I selected that I wanted to keep the newer files.
I was requested to re-start, which I did and now when I try to open the SBC Yahoo DSL, I receive the "Ybrowser" message and when I select the IE6 icon, I receive the "Microsoft Internet Explorer", "Send Error Report", " Don't Send"
I also received the following error messages, "Motivesb", This program has performed an illegal operation and will be sht down". Then a "YOP" error message.

No, never used a router and No, never used in a work environment.

Try to sign in, open the Command window as before, and ping www.google.com. Can you sign in?

Have you checked the Network properties for those three items since you rebooted after installing them?

You mentioned you are using an older laptop. What operating system is on that? 98?

Hi,
From the black MS-DOS Prompt screen, I entered "ping www.google.com" and received back a reply "Unknown host www.google.com", with some activity lights from the modem. Maybe I mis-interrupted your request, so I typed "pingwww.google.com" and received back, "Bad command or file name"
The "Network", "Configuration" properties for "Client for Microsoft Networks", noted under the "General" tab was, "Logon and restore network connections", under the "Network logon options".
The "Network, "Configurations" for "LinksysLNE100TX[v5] Fast Ethernet Adapter", noted under the "Driver Type" tab was "Enhanced mode [32 bit and 16 bit] NDIS driver"
The "Network", "Configuration" properties for "TCP/IP", noted under the "IP Address" tab was "Obtain an IP address automatically"
Yup, this laptop I'm using to communicate with you also has a Windows 98SE operating system, version 4.10.2222A.

Open the Network properties on the laptop and compare them to the pc. With the exception of the adapter are they the same?

Good Morning!
Listed under "Network", "Configuration", the "Primary Network for Logon", on the laptop is "Windows Logon" vs "Client for Microsoft Networks" on the disabled desktop. The listings under "Identification" on the laptop is specific to me, vs the generic listing of "Computer name:", "OEM Computer". "Workgroup:", "OEM Workgroup" and "Computer Description:" "Unknown User", on the laptop. The listing under "Access Control", is the same, "Share-level access control.
I changed the "Primary Network for Logon" to "Windows Logon" so they would match, rebooted, then turned-off then on the modem. When I try to open the "SBC Yahoo! DSL the typical signon appears, but the "Ybrower" message also appears and won't allow me to "Sign-In. If I try to open the IE6 icon I receive the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" request to "Send Error Report", or "Don't Send".

Hello again.

That's not quite what I'm looking for. Using this picture as a reference, what I want to know is what is listed in the Network properties dialogue box under the Configuration tab in the box below the line that says "The following network components are installed:". Please list them in the following format:

PC:
Put the list here

Laptop:
Put the list here

Also, what is the Primary Network Logon for both?

What we're trying to do is have the same components for both, adding or changing what we need on the pc to match the laptop that we know is working.

I haven't forgotten you, just been really busy, and for some reason this is baffling me. I'll get back to you shortly after I give this some thought. How would you feel about a clean install of 98?

I certainly understand, I've appreciated all the time you've taken todate trying to help me resolve this problem, hats-off to you!

Since I still have access to all my other programs, except Internet access, I'm more inclined to speed-up my purchase for replacing this computer with a new Dell Studio computer. After completing the transfer of files/data, I'd then try the clean installation of WIN98. My old laptop does not have any of my important programs on it.

I think I might have been OK if I had thought about restoring the Registry as soon as I realized what I had done.

With access to a my work computer and this laptop, I'm getting by, so I've got the partience if you do.

Well we got some input from Dan and he suggested something I had thought of but hadn't brought up so lets try it.

Download and run Winsock 2 Fix. According to the instructions it doesn't really apply but it can't do any harm. After you run that, shut down the pc, shut down the modem for 10 minutes, turn on the modem and wait til the lights settle down to where they are now, and then restart the pc with it connected to the modem, connect to ATT if you can by putting in your username and password, run command and try to ping 72.14.205.104

Hi Leurgy,

Today turned out to be a very good day, even a great day, we have success!

By installing the Winsock 2 Fix, I once again can access the Internet. WOW, I can't tell you how great it feels to have worked through this problem. I certainly have to credit you and Dan for coming to my rescue. My life can now return back to normal. My wife thought I was nuts for taking all this time trying to this issue.

You have taught me alot, that I wouldn't have learned, if it weren't for this problem and searching out this geekstogo forum. I tried the Windows Discussion Group, but no one replied to my submission.

Being new to this forum, is there anywere I can give you credit for your diligent peristent effort in helping me to solve my computer problem?
