Windows startup problem

I have a brand new HP pavilion desktop. Upon startup, it is dead slow and will not operate correctly. Basically I startup and it sits and "thinks" and either loads lust my wallpaper, or just my icons. Even the menu bar takes 10 minutes to load. In Safe mode everything loads quickly.

I am unable to shut down/restart without doing it manually by turning off the tower. I was able to run my virus software last night (CA) and although it opened, it didn't fully run. But upon closing it, my system ran fine. But would not shut down properly. Upon another restart, the same problems occured... ???????? Thanks
