Hey all,

I've got a problem with my laptop, over the last couple of months my laptop seems to have gone from been able to do everything I needed on full spec, and now barely seems to run minimum spec. I havent downloaded or cracked any games or software, I've checked for dust etc, I always keep it cool so its not getting too hot.

Laptop is:
Acer Aspire 5520
Spec:
AMD turion 64 x2 (2.0Ghz, 2x 512kb L2 cache)
Gforce 7000M 751MB
3GB DDR2
160GB HDD

I was sent here by Artellos to give you this info to see what you think and find out if you can give me any help.

Lets see if we can see any errors in the event viewer.
  • Go to Start and select the white box.
  • In the Box, type in eventvwr and hit enter.
  • When the window pops up. Go to the system log and application log.
  • Look for red circles with Xs in them around the time of error.
  • Please list all the errors you can find around the time of error.

Regards,
Olrik

Any more recent errors for the types in #13, 15, 16, 17 in the System log?
13 and 17 could be related to the error that Artellos is asking about.

Those errors are common and usually won't affect your system significantly. That being said, anything is possible, so I wouldn't rule them out completely (but would look elsewhere before working on them).

The Parallel port error is common because most manufacturer's have stopped including parallel ports on their systems, but haven't removed that function from the BIOS. So Windows detects the port even though it doesn't exist.

When does the system seem slow? If it's at a particular time, that'll give us a bit more to go on.
Try booting into Safe Mode (repeatedly tap F8 just before the Windows splash screen shows). If it works well there, then it's likely to be something that loads in normal mode that's taking up your resources.

As for resources, you can monitor them in Task Manager...Processes tab. Once in there, click on the View menu item, then on "Select columns" and select the I/O Reads and I/O Other check boxes. Click OK to accept this, then resize the Task Manager window so you can see all the columns. Make sure to click on the "Show processes from all users" button also.

Double click on the column header (CPU, Memory, I/O Reads, I/O Other) to see what's taking up the most. Anything that's significantly larger than the rest of the entries could be a clue as to what's sapping your resources. Let us know the Image Name of any problem entries.

It goes all slow and choppy when playing games. I never notice it on anything else. Though it was fine and could play everything full spec now I'm playing on min spec and its still no good.
