How to File Transfer Between 2 computers

I am trying to transfer some files from a laptop with Windows 95 to a desktop with Windows XP. I have created a network connection between the two, but it is not working. I have a connection between the desktop USB to the laptop 9-pin port. I have also turned the Windows firewall off. Could someone help me in making this connection?
