I am having trouble with my Sony Vaio. We purchased it about a year ago and then in the fall purchased another, My husband took the first (black) laptop to the desert with him and was able to connect to the wireless connection no problem. Ever since he has came back and we purchased a D-Link routerit won't connect. We have tried the wireless wizzard and it doesn't have the model router we have on the list. It now says that it is connected to the network and has local and internet accss and has a very good signal but when I bring up the internet it gives me the "cannot display page" I do the diagnose problem thing and it says that it cannot find yahoo.com through the DNS. I have Internet Explorer 8 and Mozilla Firefoxloaded and neither work. Also when I connect the ethernet cord to it it connects just fine. Please help! I have found many site ad tried many things and it is all so frustrating! I am not all that computer savvy so lamens terms and detailed instructions please!

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
• In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.

• In the new window, are Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically selected? If they are not, please write down all of the details that are listed on this page, and then select the aforementioned options.

If it does, can you please do Step 1 twice; once on your (working) laptop, and once on the (non-working) laptop. Please post the results, and label each accordingly.

Step 1 - Connectivity test:

• In the new command prompt window, please type the following commands (*Note: each ping will take approximately 10 seconds to complete; wait for the command prompt to return before you type the next one.   • route print >> C:\results.txt
  • ping 127.0.0.1 >> C:\results.txt

Thank you so much! Here are the results....and also a new thing is happening it says there is an IP address conflict. It says that there is another computer with the same IP address. All of the computers are set to obtain the addresses automatically and to detect settings automatically.

Which machine was that done on (working or non-working)?

On the non-working laptop, please do the following.

Step 1 - Disable IPv6:

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
• In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
• In the This connection uses the following items section, remove the tick beside (i.e. disable) Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then press OK.

Restart the machine and see if the issue persists.

If the issue is still occurring, let's try setup a static IP.

Step 2 - Configure a Static IP:

• Select Start
• In the Start Search field type ncpa.cpl and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
• In the new window, right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
• Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then press the Properties button.
• Select the option Use the following IP Address: and then enter in the following details:
  • IP Address: 192.168.0.199
  • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
• Select Use the following DNS Servers and enter in two DNS Servers.
  
  • Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
  • Alternate DNS Server: <leave blank>
• Press OK.

Try to connect to the Internet; can you? If not, revert the settings back to automatic (DHCP).

Hello

I been having the same problem, I called my internet provider and she told me that the problem is with my IP because its 169... and it should be 192, i dont have warranty on my laptop (sony viao, windows vista). I tried all the steps that you (Dan) put but it still hasn't solved my problem. It says the connection is excellent but I still have an error message on firefox and explorer.

I have been on virgin media to resolve this problem but i was going round in circles. A quick google and i found this. Many thanks for the advice. Lee

Need your help. I am using a Sony viao, it recognizes our new wifi (modem), it only shows a box where I can check so it can automatically connects to the internet. I tried checking it but it didn't show up any keys where I can enter the password of the wifi. Where can I find the link in entering the wifi password. It is kinda confusing, since this laptop can connect to my mobile phone and asking for a password on it's first time, but right now it wasn't asking for the password of the wireless router or modem.. sorry don't know exactly how will I call it.
