My friend has a computer with Windows XP and she used it yesterday with no problems. Today she can't get into a lot of programs as they load so slowly. She tried to restore to an earlier point and after she clicked on it, nothing happened. She then tried to get into safemode, but it wouldn't fully load. She managed to get past most of it to the point where she should get the box titled Desktop and the explanation that she was going into safemode and to click yes to continue. But it never showed up. So she just ended up with the black screen with the words Safe Mode in each corner. Is there another way to access safe mode? She doesn't have a lot of money so I am hoping these problems are not caused by a virus or malware. Her antivirus program subscription just ended and she currently has no antivirus program running. Hoping to fix this the easy way. Thanks for any help.

If she can get into normal mode then I would suggest for her to
Please go to the "Malware Forum" link in my signature below and follow the instructions at the top
Especially the "You Must Read This Before Posting A HijackThis Log".

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself.
If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty start a topic and post the requested logs in THAT forum.
Once the malware technicians have cleared out any infection and given you a clean bill of health, and if the problem continues then feel free to post back here and we can investigate the problem even more.
