I have a problem I described here that turned out not to be malware (thankfully), but is still plaguing my system. I was updating my display driver and found that when I uninstalled the old driver and did a reboot, I didn't have any problems playing my media files (i.e. no skipping, psychedelic slow motion, etc.). As soon as I installed the new driver and rebooted, same problems I was having before came right back :) . I did not pay attention to the weird artifacts I mentioned in post 9 of that topic because I just wasn't thinking about them at the time.

I'm not sure what to do about this. Anybody have a clue what could be going on and if there is a fix?

Really appreciate any help.

hello comerk

I've seen your topic before and I was pretty sure I knew what your problem was. your video card is having some pretty serious issues physically and this isn't a driver issue.

does your motherboard have an integrated video card that you can test on? if so, plug your monitor into that and see if the problem still exists.

otherwise you need to get your video card replaced.

No integrated video card, but the problem did go away when I removed the driver. Is that a good enough test? If so, and I do need to get a new card, is there a decent one out there that won't break the bank. I don't play games on my PC so I don't need anything uber-amazing. Just one that is reliable and will support my monitor (which is not out of this world either, Westinghouse LCM-22w3) and play a dvd every once in awhile.

edit
Oh! And thanks for your fast response. You guys are amazing.

No if it went away when you removed the driver it is NOT a physical problem and my initial guess was incorrect. Good work.

Please follow the instructions below to obtain a DirectX diagnostic file

1. Go to your Start menu.

2. Go to 'Run' (or 'Start Search' if you're running Vista).

3. In this window, type dxdiag

4. You may be asked a question about 'WHQL Certification', click No or Cancel if presented with this option.

5. This will run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. It will take a few minutes to complete, watch for the progress bar in the lower left hand corner for status.

6. When complete, click the Save All Information button.

7. This will bring up a Save box. Save to your desktop as dxdiag.txt (should already be default)

8. You will have saved a file called Dxdiag.txt to your desktop. Please attach this file to your next post. Copy and paste if it's small enough/if you want to :)

This report needs prefacing. I have 2 USB ports on this machine. One occupied by a mouse the other by a Kodak AIO printer. I unplugged the printer to make room for my phone. Before I plugged in the phone, but after unplugging the printer, I ran the diagnostic program. Amazed by the program which I didn't know was on my computer I ran the display and sound tests after saving this. They all say everything is fine, and it is.

Is it possible that the printer is just being a jerk? Cause I'll get rid of it. My wife wants it anyway.

The "artifacts" described first led me to think about the card being overclocked; just a thought.
I don't know how to make sense of the dxdiag log, but I don't think you have any problems with the driver.

I am assuming it had something to do with the printer being installed for some reason. ??? The "artifacts" have always been around since I can remember. They are annoying, but don't seem to affect the performance of the machine (or at least not noticeable to myself). Thinking back now, after I installed the printer (improperly, most likely, what with all the rules for installing Kodaks) was when the audio/video problem popped up.

Since that seems to be gone, have any idea on the missing/misplaced pixels? Happens in weird places, but the places it does show up, it always shows up.

Edge,

Haven't heard from you in a while. Since the last post I have uninstalled the printer and its drivers. I don't seem to be having any media problems anymore. The only drag I have now is if I try to run a flash game in full screen.

The strange hash mark problem is still around. If we can figure that out I'd be grateful, but the reason for the post was the a/v problem which I think has been solved. If the thread needs to be closed, I will understand.

Thanks!

I am very sorry. But, it's good to hear that the a/v problem has been solved.

Can you get me a picture?

What happens when you play a flash game in full screen?

If the thread needs to be closed, I will understand.

Threads are rarely closed in the Windows forums. This will stay open. We will try to fix the strange hash problem you have.

Now I'm the slow one! :)

Can you get me a picture?

This splash screen and this text should show you what the hashes look like. Most of my splash screens are like this one. Images on the web show up just fine as does most text on the internet. The text image is an example of what happens when editing documents and when I type in certain text boxes (like the password box to log in to windows xp).

What happens when you play a flash game in full screen?

If I save a flash game to my computer from a game site (e.g. armor games) and play it in a browser window that is maximized or full screen, it just runs slower than if I resize the window to the size that it is when you play it while it is embedded in the original web page.

To me, this appears to be normal.

As for the artifact problem, it is far from normal. Did you try reinstalling an application that has hashes on the splash screen, and then see if the hashes go away? Do the hashes always look the same with each splash screen?

Two questions just to get some info:

How much system memory do you have

What video card is it? Nvidia is the make but what model?

Try uninstalling drivers for video and then reboot and go into safe mode. Reinstall drivers from there and then reboot. Allow system to boot into normal mode and see if that fixes the problem.

NVIDIA GeForce 6200
That is his card according to the Dxdiag report.
http://www.nvidia.co...82.50_whql.html
Download the drivers from there.

edge and shaffer,

Also from the Dxdiag report:

Memory: 1536MB RAM

If that entry is referring to "system memory" then there you go. If I right click "My Computer" and choose properties, I show 1.50 GB of RAM. If there is another # you are looking for, let me know.

Thanks for the link to the drivers. I will download them and reinstall in the method described within the next 24.

As for the consistency, edge, to the best of my knowledge, the splash screens are the same each time. But it happens in so many places. MSOffice, ASUS, Paint Shop, Windows, etc. It seems as though I would have to practically reformat and reinstall every app in order to fix the splashes. To tell you the truth, I could care less about them as long as my computer seems to be operating fine otherwise :) The one thing that is slightly annoying is the missing pixels with the fonts. THOSE do not always appear in the same location. In fact, if you select/de-select a section of text, the marks will most likely change locations!!
