I need help removing Aurora. I've tried to read the other replies, but it all starts to get really confusing. So I downloaded hijackthis, saved a copy of it in C:/Program Files, scaned and saved a log in notepad. So here is my saved log. I hope you can help. Thank you.

Hi Amber15lynn and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums. Your system has what we call an About:Blank infection

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from your Desktop.

4. Download the most current version of Hijackthis (v.1.99.1) to a folder of its own. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Please click on the "My Computer" icon, then the C: drive icon. Next Right click on the desktop and choose NEW from the list available then> Folder' and name the folder 'HijackThis'. The end result should resemble something like this C:\HijackThis\

B. Download Hijackthis from:HERE

C. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

D. Close ALL windows except HJT

E. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

F. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Amber15lynn

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1. Download and install Cleanup from: HERE. Extract it from the zip file to your desktop. Install the application accepting the defaults. DO NOT RUN IT UNTIL SO INSTRUCTED

2. Download and install a 14-day free version of Ewido Security Suite from:HERE. Update its definitions. DO NOT RUN UNTIL SO INSTRUCTED.

3. REBOOT into Safe MODE

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

4. Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: Need2Find Bar BHO - {4D1C4E81-A32A-416b-BCDB-33B3EF3617D3} - C:\Program Files\Need2Find\bar\1.bin\ND2FNBAR.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pzxikjk] c:\windows\system32\ahjldsy.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kb.bar.need2f...earch.html?p=KB
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):(Expect to still see Nail.exe in the next log)

FILES

c:\windows\system32\ahjldsy.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

FOLDERS (with all their content)

C:\Program Files\Need2Find

5) Go to start > run and type: sc delete SvcProc

6. Go to start > run and type: %WinDir%\Nail.exe /FullRemove

7. Locate Cleanup through START<<Program . Click the Cleanup Icon and when the program opens, click on the clean up button.

8. REBOOT into NORMAL MODE .

9. RUN and perform a FULL SCAN with EWIDO.

10. REBOOT your system.

11. Finally, run HijackThis and with all windows closed except for HJT, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Amber15lynn,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download Killbox here: http://www.downloads...org/KillBox.exe and put it on your desktop

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Standard File Kill
End Explorer Shell While Killing file

Copy & paste the full path of each of the files below into the Killbox topmost box.

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox, Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

It may not be deleted[/u.

When you are through the list, use killbox to delete the files you were not able to delete as follows:

Open Killbox

Check the following boxes:

Delete on Reboot

With the full path to the file name in the topmost textbox. Click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click Yes

Note: Killbox will let you know if the file does not exist.

After the reboot scan with hijackthis and fix the following if it is still listed :

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Reboot and [u]Post a new hijackthis log

Regards,

Well, I tried surfing around a bit, and it doesn't seem to be popping up at all. I went to new places and ones I remembering it popping up on, so maybe it's all cured!! One thing I've noticed is that the look of the screen has changed, fonts, explorer buttons, xp task bar, etc. How do I change that back or should I just leave it alone? Thanks

Hi Amber15lynn,

Most of those cosmetic desktop things can be changed manually after we are sure that everything is OK.

Try your computer until tomorrow night and then send me a log and a report on how everything was. Then we will talk about final cleanup

Inthe meantime, please do the following:

1. Please click HERE to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. Reboot when prompted.

2. Disable then Enable System Restore in Windows XP

To Disable System Restore

. Right click on "My Computer"
. Left click on "Properties"
. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
. Left click on "Apply"
. Confirmation box appears: answer "YES"

To Enable System Restore

. Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
. Click on "Apply"

Well, I've been on the internet for some time now, and I haven't gotten any aurora pop ups. Before I was getting them every couple of minutes at least. So I guess it's cured!! You had mentioned a final clean up? Thanks so much.

Hi Amber15lynn,

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Trevuren
